Chef Ji-Sung’s ‘Mandu Gratin’ Recipe: A Comfort Food Upgrade
Easy ‘Mandu Gratin’ Recipe Using Frozen Dumplings and Rice
Remember Ji-Sung’s famous ‘Mandu-bap’ (dumpling rice) from the TV show ‘Happy Together’? It sparked an idea to create an even more decadent dish: ‘Mandu Gratin’! This dish offers a delightful texture, somewhere between a creamy risotto and a hearty rice bowl, making it a surprisingly light yet satisfying meal.
Ingredients (Serves 1)- 4 frozen dumplings
- 1 scoop cooked rice (approx. 1 ladleful)
- 3 Tbsp tomato sauce
- Shredded pizza cheese (mozzarella)
- 1 slice processed cheese
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Arrange the 4 frozen dumplings in a single layer at the bottom of a microwave-safe bowl. They should fit snugly depending on their size. Cover the dumplings with plastic wrap, poke a few holes with a fork to allow steam to escape, and microwave for about 2 minutes. This will partially defrost the dumplings, making them easier to cut.
Step 2
Carefully remove the bowl from the microwave. Using kitchen scissors or a knife, cut the dumplings into bite-sized pieces or your desired size. Cutting them too small might diminish their texture once mixed with the rice, so aim for a moderate size.
Step 3
Add the scoop of freshly cooked rice on top of the cut dumplings. Mix them together thoroughly with a spoon or spatula until the dumplings and rice are well combined. Ensure the rice isn’t too mushy to prevent the gratin from becoming overly wet.
Step 4
Spread 3 tablespoons of tomato sauce evenly over the mixed dumpling and rice base. Use the back of your spoon to smooth it out for consistent flavor. If you have rosé sauce, feel free to substitute it for the tomato sauce for a creamier and equally delicious result.
Step 5
Generously sprinkle shredded pizza cheese over the tomato sauce. If you’re short on pizza cheese, you can use shredded string cheese or tear up a slice of processed cheese to cover the surface. Finish by topping with 1 slice of processed cheese for an extra creamy layer. Microwave for another 1 minute and 30 seconds, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Step 6
Once the gratin is out of the microwave, sprinkle with dried parsley flakes for a touch of color and aroma. This incredibly simple yet delicious recipe creates a wonderful meal. It’s a hit with kids and makes for a surprisingly elegant dish for any occasion. The flavor is genuinely satisfying, perfect for when you need a quick and tasty meal!
