Caramelized Onion Toast: A Recipe for Love

Today, I’m sharing a delightful snack recipe that earned me rave reviews from my husband! He loved it so much, he even talked about it in his sleep – that’s how good this Onion Toast is! It features wonderfully caramelized onions, savory Spam, and melted cheese, all sandwiched between perfectly toasted bread. Let’s make this irresistible treat together!

Recipe Info

  • Category : Bread
  • Ingredient Category : Flour / Wheat
  • Occasion : Snack
  • Cooking : Grilled / Roasted
  • Servings : 1 serving
  • Cooking Time : Within 10 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Essential Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 slices of Spam
  • 2 slices of cheese

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, thinly slice the onion. Slicing them thinly will ensure they cook evenly and faster. Melt 1 Tbsp of butter in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté them gently.

Step 1

Step 2

Once the onions become translucent, add 1 Tbsp of sugar and continue to cook. Stir frequently until the onions soften, turn a beautiful caramel color, and their natural moisture has evaporated, which should take about 10-15 minutes. This process eliminates the raw onion sharpness and brings out a deep, natural sweetness.

Step 2

Step 3

While the onions are caramelizing, slice the Spam into your desired thickness or bite-sized pieces and pan-fry them until golden brown and slightly crispy. This renders out some of the fat and enhances the savory flavor.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, prepare the bread for your toast. Toast the 2 slices of bread on low heat until they are lightly golden brown on both sides. Be careful not to burn them by using excessive heat. For an extra touch of richness, you can lightly butter the bread before toasting.

Step 4

Step 5

On one slice of the toasted bread, generously spread the sweet, caramelized onions. Applying the warm onions will help them adhere better to the bread.

Step 5

Step 6

Next, arrange the pan-fried Spam slices attractively over the onions. The salty Spam will create a wonderful contrast with the sweet onions.

Step 6

Step 7

Optionally, for an even more intense caramel flavor, you can sprinkle a tiny bit more sugar over the onions at this stage. (Optional)

Step 7

Step 8

Finally, top everything with 2 slices of cheese. As the cheese melts, it will bind all the ingredients together and add a creamy, rich dimension to the toast.

Step 8

Step 9

Place the second slice of toasted bread on top to complete the sandwich. Lightly butter a clean pan and grill the assembled toast over low heat, flipping it gently, until the cheese is fully melted and the bread is wonderfully crispy on both sides. You’ve now created a delicious Onion Toast that’s crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and guaranteed to impress!
