Let’s make a deliciously sweet and savory braised mackerel with radish, using canned mackerel and plenty of sweet radish. This recipe is perfect for a quick and flavorful meal.
Main Ingredients- 1 can (15 oz / ~400g) Canned Mackerel (with liquid)
- 1/3 Korean Radish (approx. 300-400g)
- 1/2 Onion
- 1 stalk Green Onion
- 3 Korean Green Chilies (adjust to spice preference)
Seasoning Mix- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
- 4 Tbsp Soy Sauce (Korean ‘jin’ soy sauce preferred)
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
- 4 Tbsp Soy Sauce (Korean ‘jin’ soy sauce preferred)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare your vegetables. Slice the radish into approximately 1cm thick half-moons or flat rounds. Thinly slice the onion. Chop the green onion and Korean green chilies into bite-sized pieces. (If you prefer more spice, add extra chilies, or omit them if serving to children.)
Step 2
Now, let’s make the delicious seasoning mix. In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp minced garlic, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, 1 Tbsp gochujang, 1 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, and 4 Tbsp soy sauce. Mix them well until thoroughly combined. This seasoning blend is key to the dish’s flavor, so take your time mixing it.
Step 3
Get a pot or a deep wok ready. Arrange the sliced radishes evenly on the bottom of the pot. Then, add the canned mackerel, including all of its liquid. Don’t worry about any fishy smell; it will mellow out and add depth as it braises with the radish.
Step 4
On top of the mackerel and radish, arrange the sliced onion, chopped green onion, and Korean green chilies. To measure the water, rinse the empty mackerel can and fill it with 1 cup of water. This not only helps with measurement but also adds to the savory base of the braise.
Step 5
Pour the flavorful seasoning mix you prepared evenly over all the ingredients in the pot. Make sure to coat everything well so the flavors distribute evenly.
Step 6
Finally, cover the pot and simmer over medium-low heat for about 15-20 minutes, or until the radish becomes tender and translucent, and the sauce has thickened nicely. Basting with the sauce occasionally will enhance the flavor. Your delicious canned mackerel and radish braise is ready to be enjoyed!
