Ingredients
  • Daikon radish, about 150g
  • Garlic, 3-5 cloves
  • Soy sauce, 1 Tbsp
  • Butter, about 10g
  • Green onion, as needed
  • Chili powder, a pinch
  • Salt, a pinch

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the daikon radish. Peel the daikon and cut it into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3 cm thick, half-moon or square shapes). Place the cut daikon in a pot and add enough water to cover it. Bring to a boil.

Step 2

Once the water boils, reduce the heat to medium and continue to simmer for about 5 minutes without a lid. This process will help the daikon become tender and release some of its natural sweetness.

Step 3

After simmering for 5 minutes, drain the daikon radish using a colander, ensuring all excess water is removed. You can save the cooking water for other uses if desired.

Step 4

Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and melt the butter. Once the butter is melted, add the minced or thinly sliced garlic. Sauté the garlic until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. This step infuses the dish with a wonderful aroma.

Step 5

When the butter and garlic are fragrant, add the drained daikon radish to the pan. Stir-fry over medium heat for about 2-3 minutes, allowing the daikon to get slightly browned. This adds a pleasant texture and depth of flavor.

Step 6

Once the daikon is sautéed, add the soy sauce, salt, and chili powder. Toss everything together to coat the daikon evenly. Increase the heat slightly and stir-fry quickly for about 1-2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to absorb into the radish.

Step 7

Finally, add the chopped green onions and stir briefly to combine. Your delicious Braised Daikon Radish with Butter and Soy Sauce (Garibata Daikon) is ready! It’s best served warm, but it’s also delicious chilled.
