Cooking Instructions
Step 1
The name ‘Hwanghwacha’ (쌍화차) literally means ‘harmonizing’ or ‘pairing together’ (Ssanghwa). It signifies harmonizing the body’s vital energy (qi) and blood, replenishing both deficiencies in yin and yang. This potent tea is made with 10 superior medicinal herbs known for boosting immunity: Peony root, Angelica gigas root, Astragalus root, Cnidium officinale root, Kudzu root, Prepared Rehmannia root, Dried Ginger, Jujube dates, Licorice root, and Cinnamon bark. Notably, Peony root is used in double the quantity of other herbs to enhance its efficacy.
Step 2
Purchasing each of these herbs individually can lead to large quantities and significant expense. It’s so convenient to find them sold in pre-portioned kits like this, perfect for brewing at home.
Step 3
Carefully measure out 10g of each herb from your kit. Remember to measure out 20g of Peony root, as it’s used in double the amount.
Step 4
The included instructions for making Hwanghwacha suggest: “Divide the Hwanghwacha ingredients into approximately 10 portions and boil with 2 liters of water. Start boiling over high heat, then reduce to medium heat once it boils and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Then, it’s ready to drink.” You can follow this method precisely.
Step 5
For an even simpler brewing process, I used an ‘Ok-ku’ appliance, which is a type of health juice maker. I lightly rinsed the herbs under running water and then added them to the appliance along with 2 liters of water.
Step 6
Next, select the ‘Herbal Tea’ mode and let the machine do its magic. In about 2 hours and 20 minutes, your delicious Hwanghwacha will be ready!
Step 7
You can enjoy the Hwanghwacha as is, or for a sweeter taste, add a drizzle of honey. Adding honey enhances the flavor profile, making it even more delightful to drink.
