Ingredients
- 1 large onion
- 2 tsp vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1 cup tempura flour (or all-purpose flour)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 Tbsp water
- 2 tsp dried parsley
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
- 1/2 tsp oligodang (or corn syrup/honey)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Voila! Once completed, the Blooming Onion looks like a beautiful golden flower. Its delightful crispiness and sweet onion flavor make it a perfect alternative to fried onion rings served at your favorite casual dining spots or burger joints.
Step 2
Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe, as listed above. You’ll find that most of these are common pantry staples.
Step 3
First, trim off the very top and the root end of the onion. Be careful not to cut too deeply into the root end, as this is what holds the onion petals together. Now, make cuts from the top towards the root, stopping about an inch from the bottom. Depending on the size of your onion, aim for 8, 12, or 16 wedges. Ensure the onion remains intact at the base.
Step 4
To mellow out the onion’s pungent flavor and bring out its natural sweetness, place the cut onion in a bowl of cold water for about 30 minutes. This soaking step is crucial for a milder taste.
Step 5
After soaking, carefully remove the onion from the water and gently pat it dry thoroughly with paper towels, making sure to get into all the crevices. This step is important for the coating to adhere properly. Next, generously dredge the onion in tempura flour, ensuring the flour gets into all the layers, especially the inside. Coat it evenly.
Step 6
Once coated with flour, it’s time for the egg wash. Whisk the egg with 2 tablespoons of water. Dip the onion into the egg wash, ensuring it’s coated all over. If it’s difficult to do by hand, use a spoon to help coat the inner parts. Repeat this egg wash process once more. For the final coating, mix breadcrumbs with dried parsley and chili powder. Press the onion firmly into this breadcrumb mixture to create a crispy crust. Ensure the breadcrumbs adhere well.
Step 7
Now, we’ll use an air fryer for cooking. Place the coated onion into the air fryer basket. Lightly spray the onion with vegetable oil. Set the air fryer to 180°C (350°F) and cook for approximately 15 minutes. Flipping it halfway through will help ensure even cooking and crispiness.
Step 8
Once the cooking time is up, your beautiful and delicious Blooming Onion is ready! Enjoy it while it’s warm for the best texture and flavor.
