With kids spending more time at home, figuring out daily meals can be a challenge. Today, for my daughter who loves tteokbokki, I’ve made a Jjajang Tteokbokki using black bean sauce powder, which is as simple to make as instant noodles. The rich flavor of jjajang is perfect for a quick and satisfying meal that the whole family will enjoy. Let’s whip up some delicious Jjajang Tteokbokki together!

Recipe Info

  • Category : Rice / Porridge / Rice cake
  • Ingredient Category : Flour / Wheat
  • Occasion : Snack
  • Cooking : Boil / Simmer
  • Servings : 2 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 30 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Main Ingredients

  • 250g Tteokbokki rice cakes
  • 2 sheets fish cakes (eomuk)
  • 1/3 onion
  • 1/3 stalk green onion

Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp instant jjajang powder
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • A pinch of sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Soak the tteokbokki rice cakes in water for about 10 to 15 minutes. This softens them, preventing them from sticking together during cooking and ensuring a tender texture.

Step 1

Step 2

Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces that are easy to eat and will absorb the sauce well. Slice the onion thinly into strips, and cut the green onion into large diagonal pieces. Chopping the vegetables into slightly larger pieces will prevent them from becoming mushy when cooked, maintaining a pleasant texture.

Step 2

Step 3

In a pot, combine 400g of water with 2 Tbsp of instant jjajang powder, 1 Tbsp of sugar, and 1/2 Tbsp of minced garlic. Whisk well with a spoon or whisk to dissolve the jjajang powder completely in the water. Then, bring to a boil over medium heat to create the sauce base.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the jjajang powder is fully dissolved and the sauce has thickened and started to boil, add the prepared rice cakes, fish cakes, and sliced onion. Stir everything together to ensure the sauce coats all the ingredients evenly.

Step 4

Step 5

Simmer until the rice cakes are cooked through and the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency. Add the large pieces of green onion and let it simmer for another minute to infuse its flavor. Turn off the heat as soon as the aroma of the green onion is released. Cooking too long can make the green onion too soft.

Step 5

Step 6

Transfer the delicious Jjajang Tteokbokki to a serving dish. Sprinkle a pinch of sesame seeds on top for a final touch. Enjoy this delightful dish while it’s warm to savor the perfect combination of chewy rice cakes and rich black bean sauce!
