Main Ingredients- 2 Pork Neck Steaks (approx. 1.5-2cm thick)
- 1/2 Onion
- 5 Cloves Garlic
Special Steak Sauce- 3 Tbsp Ketchup
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Vinegar
- 1/2 Cup Water (standard paper cup)
- 1 Tbsp Butter
Pork Neck Seasoning- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
- 3 Tbsp Ketchup
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Vinegar
- 1/2 Cup Water (standard paper cup)
- 1 Tbsp Butter
Pork Neck Seasoning- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, tenderize the pork neck by gently pounding it with the back of a knife. This helps to remove any gamey smell and improve texture. If the meat is too thin, you can skip this step. For thicker cuts, making shallow scores with the knife will help the marinade penetrate better and cook more evenly. (Tip: I only used the back of the knife to tenderize for a softer texture. Using Hy-Vee pork neck ensures a tender and delicious steak.)
Step 2
Season the pork neck evenly on both sides with 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper. If you have herb salt, sprinkling that on will add even more flavor.
Step 3
Slice the onion into approximately 0.5cm thick strips. This will add a lovely sweetness and depth to the sauce. Feel free to use a generous amount of onion if you have plenty at home!
Step 4
Now, let’s make the delicious steak sauce! In a bowl, combine 3 tablespoons of ketchup, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, and 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Add 1/2 cup of water (measured with a standard paper cup) and mix well. You’ll have a perfectly balanced sweet and tangy sauce.
Step 5
Lightly oil a pan and place the seasoned pork neck to cook. Aim to sear it until golden brown and slightly crispy. (Tip: Avoid using excessively high heat, as it can cause oil splatters. Medium heat is ideal for even cooking.)
Step 6
While the pork is cooking, you can add the whole garlic cloves to the same pan or a separate one and lightly sauté them. Lightly browned garlic becomes sweet and complements the steak beautifully.
Step 7
Cook the pork neck over medium heat for about 5 to 10 minutes, almost frying it, until it’s cooked through and juicy. Once cooked, place the steak on paper towels to absorb any excess oil and let it rest for a moment.
Step 8
In the sauce pan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté them until they become translucent and sweet. Once the onions are softened, pour in the prepared steak sauce and bring it to a simmer.
Step 9
Once the sauce is bubbling, add the cooked pork neck steak back into the pan. Stir and coat the steak with the sauce for about 2 minutes. (Tip: The sauce is for flavoring, not for cooking the meat further, so ensure the steak is fully cooked before adding it to the sauce.) When everything is well coated, turn off the heat and serve immediately. Enjoy your delicious homemade steak!
