Main Ingredients
- 4 sheets of square fish cakes
- 1/2 onion
- 1/2 stalk of green onion
- 2 Tbsp cooking oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. You can cut them into long strips or triangles; feel free to cut them according to your preference. Finely chop the green onion and slice the onion to a similar size as the fish cakes.
Step 2
Heat 2 Tbsp of cooking oil in a wide pan over medium-low heat. Add the chopped green onion and 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, and stir-fry until fragrant. Stir-frying slowly until the aroma of the green onion and garlic rises will significantly deepen the flavor.
Step 3
Once the green onion aroma starts to develop, add the sliced onion and stir-fry until it becomes translucent. When the onion is sweetly cooked, add all the prepared fish cakes and stir-fry lightly.
Step 4
Now for Baek Jong-won’s special secret! Add about 90ml of water. Adding water to stir-fried fish cakes might seem unusual, but boiling them with water makes the fish cakes much softer and helps the seasoning penetrate deeply, resulting in a much richer flavor. Let the fish cakes absorb some moisture as the water comes to a boil.
Step 5
Before the water significantly reduces, add 1 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, and 2 Tbsp soy sauce to season. Adding the seasoning in advance while there’s still some moisture allows the flavor to permeate deep into the fish cakes, making them even tastier. Mix well to ensure the seasoning is evenly distributed among the ingredients.
Step 6
Stir-fry over medium-low heat, allowing it to simmer and reduce rather than using high heat, so the seasoning can evenly coat the fish cakes and vegetables. Once the liquid has mostly evaporated and the ingredients are glossy, turn off the heat and finish by drizzling in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil. If desired, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds or sesame seeds for a more appetizing finish. This is a truly simple yet guaranteed-to-be-delicious recipe!
