Let’s make Tofu Kimchi, a dish that’s perfect as both a side dish and a great snack. We’ll show you how to easily create this popular Korean classic at home.
Main Ingredients- 1/2 cup well-fermented kimchi (about 100g)
- 1/2 block firm tofu (about 150g)
- 1/4 stalk green onion (about 20g)
- 1 Tbsp cooking oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s get started on making Tofu Kimchi, a dish that boasts the perfect harmony of spicy stir-fried kimchi and soft tofu. You’ll be able to easily complete this impressive Korean dish at home, just like the professionals.
Step 2
Heat a pan over medium heat and add 1 Tbsp of cooking oil. Add the chopped green onions and stir-fry for about 1 minute until fragrant, creating a flavorful green onion oil. Next, add the finely chopped kimchi (using aged or sour kimchi will make it even tastier), about 1/2 cup, and 1 Tbsp of gochugaru. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, ensuring the kimchi is evenly coated with the oil and chili powder until it looks glossy. Once the kimchi becomes translucent and shiny, add 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 tsp sugar, and 1/2 tsp minced garlic (optional). Stir well to combine all ingredients. Finally, drizzle in a little sesame oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds for an extra nutty aroma to complete the delicious stir-fried kimchi.
Step 3
While the kimchi is stir-frying, prepare the tofu. Bring a pot of water to a boil, add the 1/2 block of tofu, and blanch it for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. This helps remove any raw smell from the tofu and gives it a firmer texture. Be careful not to overcook, as the tofu might break apart. Drain the blanched tofu, rinse it with cold water to cool it down, and then cut it into bite-sized pieces (about 2cm thick).
Step 4
Arrange the warm, prepared tofu attractively on a plate. Serve the freshly stir-fried delicious kimchi alongside it, and your impressive Tofu Kimchi dish is complete! Try wrapping a piece of warm tofu with the spicy stir-fried kimchi – you’ll be amazed by the fantastic combination of flavors. It makes for the ultimate snack when paired with makgeolli (Korean rice wine) or a cold beer!
