Main Ingredients- 2 slices of bread
- 2 eggs
- 1 pinch of salt
- 2 slices of cheese
- 1-2 Tbsp butter or margarine
- 1/2 green onion stalk
- 1-2 Tbsp sugar
Optional Ingredients- 2 slices of processed ham
- 2 slices of processed ham
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, cut the green onion stalk in half lengthwise, then mince it very finely. The subtle onion flavor will enrich the taste of the toast.
Step 2
In a large bowl, crack 2 eggs. Add the finely minced green onion and a pinch of salt. Whisk thoroughly with a fork or whisk until the egg whites and yolks are well combined. Stir to ensure the green onion is evenly distributed in the egg mixture.
Step 3
Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and melt 1-2 Tbsp of butter or margarine. (Street toast typically uses margarine, but butter also adds great flavor. Use what you have at home.) Once the butter is melted, pour the whisked egg mixture into the pan. Place 2 slices of bread side-by-side on top of the egg mixture, letting it spread gently to the edges of the bread to cook.
Step 4
When the edges of the egg mixture start to cook and the top is slightly set, carefully flip the toast with a spatula. Be mindful of the heat to prevent the egg from burning, and cook until golden brown.
Step 5
Once the flipped side is cooked, place 2 slices of cheese evenly on one side of the bread. (If you want to add other ingredients like processed ham or bacon, you can place them on top of the cheese. Feel free to adjust the fillings based on what you have in your fridge to create your own unique toast!) Then, lift the other slice of bread and fold it over the cheese to create a half-moon shape.
Step 6
Add a little more butter or margarine to the pan, and place the folded toast in it. Cook over low heat, flipping occasionally, until the bread is golden brown and crispy. The butter or margarine will soak into the bread, adding a rich, savory flavor.
Step 7
Cut the well-cooked toast into bite-sized pieces (usually in half or quarters) and arrange them on a plate. Finally, sprinkle sugar generously over the toast for a touch of sweetness. Your delicious street-style egg cheese toast is now complete!
