Ingredients- Bacon (as much as you like)
- 4 slices of processed cheese
- 1 packet of instant rice
- A pinch of salt
- A little sesame oil
- Rice cakes (about 2 small pieces or 1 large piece)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, cut the processed cheese slices into 3 equal pieces. This ensures the cheese melts nicely and balances the overall flavor when wrapped with bacon.
Step 2
Warm up 1 packet of instant rice in the microwave and place it in a bowl. Season it lightly with a pinch of salt and a little sesame oil, similar to how you’d season rice for kimbap. Be cautious not to oversalt, as the bacon and cheese will add their own saltiness later. Aim for a subtle seasoning, just enough for you to notice a hint of salt when tasted. This is a crucial tip for the best flavor balance!
Step 3
Shape the seasoned rice into oval-shaped balls, similar to sushi rice. One packet of instant rice will yield about 6 rice balls. (Refer to the video for shaping guidance if needed.)
Step 4
Now, let’s wrap the rice balls with bacon. Lay a strip of bacon flat, then place a piece of the cut cheese lengthwise on top of the bacon. Place a shaped rice ball horizontally on top of the cheese and bacon, and then carefully roll it up tightly, ensuring the bacon encloses everything securely.
Step 5
For the rice cakes, follow the same wrapping method. Instead of rice, use a rice cake. Use about 2 small rice cakes or 1 large rice cake per roll. Because rice cakes can be slippery, it’s a good idea to secure the roll with a toothpick once wrapped. (Pro-tip: Blanch the rice cakes briefly in boiling water before using them for a chewier and more delicious texture!)
Step 6
Now, it’s time to cook the prepared rolls in a frying pan. You don’t need to add any extra oil, as the bacon will release plenty of its own fat. To ensure they cook evenly and don’t unravel, start by searing the seam side down first, then continue cooking until all sides are golden brown and crispy.
Step 7
Once all the rolls are beautifully cooked and golden brown, arrange them on a plate. Your delicious Bacon Cheese Rice Balls and Bacon-Wrapped Rice Cakes are now ready to be enjoyed! They make a satisfying meal or a fantastic appetizer. 😋
