Main Ingredients- 1 handful fresh Maesaengi (seaweed) (approx. 100g)
- 1 cup Jeon-garu (Korean pancake mix) (approx. 100g)
- 1 fresh egg
- 5 Tbsp cold water (approx. 75ml)
Dipping Sauce (Optional)- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp vinegar
- Pinch of red pepper flakes
- 1 Tbsp chopped green onion
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp vinegar
- Pinch of red pepper flakes
- 1 Tbsp chopped green onion
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, rinse the fresh Maesaengi thoroughly under cold running water to clean it. Drain the rinsed Maesaengi in a sieve, then gently press it with your hands to squeeze out as much excess water as possible. Be careful not to squeeze too hard, as this can diminish its aroma.
Step 2
In a large bowl, combine the cleaned Maesaengi, 1 cup of Jeon-garu (Korean pancake mix), 1 fresh egg, and 5 tablespoons of cold water. Precise measurement of ingredients is key for the best results.
Step 3
Using a spatula or spoon, mix all the ingredients evenly until a smooth batter forms, ensuring there are no lumps. The key is to gently mix so the Maesaengi doesn’t clump together. The batter should be thick enough not to be too runny.
Step 4
Heat a pan over medium-low heat and add about two drizzles of cooking oil. Spoon the batter onto the hot pan, about one spoonful at a time, spreading it thinly. Cooking over high heat can burn the outside before the inside is cooked, so medium-low heat allows it to cook through evenly while achieving a crispy exterior. Flip and fry until golden brown on both sides, aiming for a slightly fried texture.
Step 5
The warm, freshly fried Maesaengi Jeon is delicious on its own, but for an extra flavor boost, try it with a dipping sauce made from soy sauce, vinegar, red pepper flakes, and chopped green onions. The unique aroma of Maesaengi, the savory flavor of the pancake mix, and the crispy texture combine to create an unforgettable winter delicacy. Make your mealtime special with this simple yet flavorful Maesaengi Jeon!
