Aromatic Roasted Barley Tea: Traditional Elixir for Detox and Digestion
How to Brew Detoxifying Roasted Barley Tea at Home: Simple & Delicious Method
Hello! As they say, ‘Food is strength.’ Roasted barley tea, made by toasting and brewing barley grains in water, is a beloved traditional Korean beverage, often enjoyed alongside ‘soongnyung’ (scorched rice water). It’s known to nourish the five internal organs, improve poor appetite, alleviate indigestion, aid digestion when consumed after meals, and contribute to lowering cholesterol levels. Today, I’ll share a method for brewing roasted barley tea that’s especially noted for its effectiveness in eliminating heavy metals.
Ingredients- 50g of store-bought whole roasted barley tea
- 2 liters of fresh water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare 2 liters of water. (If you are using a large 7-liter pot, please scale the water quantity accordingly. Here, we will proceed with a 2-liter base for a typical household.)
Step 2
Pour the water into your pot and let it boil for 5 minutes with the lid open. This step effectively removes residual chlorine from tap water, resulting in a cleaner taste for your barley tea.
Step 3
Now, bring the water to a rolling boil. Once the water starts boiling vigorously, proceed to the next step.
Step 4
Add the 50g of well-roasted whole barley tea grains to the boiling water. Reduce the heat to medium-low, and let it simmer for another 10 minutes with the lid off. During this time, the rich, nutty aroma and flavor of the barley will fully infuse into the water.
Step 5
After simmering for 10 minutes, close the lid. This allows the barley tea to develop an even deeper flavor profile.
Step 6
Turn off the heat and let the tea steep, covered, for 10 minutes. This steeping process ensures that all the beneficial compounds from the barley are thoroughly extracted into the water.
Step 7
Once steeping is complete, remove the roasted barley grains using a sieve. It’s best to remove the grains promptly to prevent any bitterness from developing.
Step 8
Now, we will perform a ‘quick cooling’ process to preserve the tea’s flavor. You can place the pot containing the barley tea into a larger basin filled with cold water, or gradually add cold water to the pot while stirring. This method helps to retain the unique nutty essence of the barley tea.
Step 9
Once completely cooled, pour the barley tea into a clean bottle or container and store it in the refrigerator. This way, you can enjoy delicious barley tea for several days without the flavor diminishing. Stay healthy and refreshed with this comforting roasted barley tea!
