Made with fresh perilla leaves and chives from my mom’s garden, this perilla leaf and chive pancake is a special treat. The unique aroma of perilla and the refreshing taste of chives create a delightful combination, perfect as a side dish or an appetizer with drinks! Main Ingredients- 1 bowl of fresh perilla leaves (approx. 100g)
- 1 bunch of fresh chives (approx. 50g)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (approx. 120g)
- 1 cup pancake mix (approx. 120g)
- 2 red chilies
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, gently wash the perilla leaves and chives under running water multiple times to remove any dirt or debris, ensuring they remain fresh. After washing, drain them thoroughly in a colander.
Step 2
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and pancake mix in a 1:1 ratio. Gradually add water while mixing to create a thick batter. The batter should be thick enough to pour slowly off a chopstick. Once the batter is ready, add the cleaned perilla leaves and chives, and gently mix with chopsticks until the ingredients are well coated.
Step 3
Finely chop the red chilies after removing the seeds. You can either mix them into the batter for a bit of heat and color, or use them as a garnish later.
Step 4
Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Once the pan is hot, ladle about one serving of the batter and spread it thinly in a circular motion, starting from the center outwards. Spreading it thin will result in a crispier and more delicious pancake.

When the bottom side is golden brown and the edges start to lift slightly, carefully flip the pancake using a spatula and cook the other side until golden brown as well. Adjusting the heat during this step is crucial to prevent burning and ensure it’s cooked through.
