Main Ingredients
  • Well-fermented kimchi, 2 packed cups (using a paper cup)
  • Low-sodium sausages, 1 pack
  • Spam (medium size), 1 can (340g)
  • Canned baked beans (or kidney beans), 1 can
  • Tofu, 1 block
  • Ground pork, 2 cups
  • Green onions, 1 bunch
  • Water, 4 cups

Seasoning
  • Gochujang (Korean chili paste), 2 heaping tablespoons
  • Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes), 2 heaping tablespoons
  • Sugar, 2 tablespoons
  • Black pepper, 2 teaspoons
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Tsuyu (or soy sauce), 2 tablespoons
  • Minced garlic, 2 heaping tablespoons

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

This recipe is for preparing a 2-serving Budae Jjigae pack.

Step 2

Cut the Spam in half and then slice it into 0.8cm thick rounds. Cut each of the low-sodium sausages in half, resulting in 10 pieces.

Step 3

Divide the prepared ingredients into two portions. Pack one portion for freezing and prepare the other for immediate cooking in your rice cooker.

Step 4

For one serving to be cooked immediately: Add 1 packed cup of well-fermented kimchi, 1 cup of ground pork, half a can of Spam, 5 sausage pieces, half a can of baked beans, and half a block of tofu to your rice cooker pot. Then, add the seasonings: 1 heaping tablespoon of Gochujang, 1 heaping tablespoon of minced garlic, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. If you have Tsuyu, add 1 tablespoon (or use soy sauce). Add salt if needed to adjust the flavor. Pour in 4 cups of water.

Step 5

I find using a rice cooker incredibly convenient. Once everything is in, just press the cook button and you can multitask while your delicious stew is being prepared.

Step 6

About 15 minutes after the rice cooker starts boiling, the broth will become flavorful and refreshing. If you plan to add ramen noodles, cook for about 15 minutes after boiling starts, then add the noodles. For a thicker stew perfect for mixing with rice, simmer for an additional 10 minutes. Adjust the seasoning with salt if necessary towards the end.

Step 7

Today, I cooked it a bit thicker to enjoy with rice, and it was so delicious that I finished two bowls!
