Today, we’re making dumpling wrapper churros, a popular menu item from ‘Happy Together’s Night Restaurant’! I had some leftover dumpling wrappers in my freezer and was contemplating making fried dumplings or another fried snack. Then, I remembered seeing this recipe on a past broadcast and decided to give it a try! These churros offer a delightful crispy exterior and a chewy interior, a unique twist on traditional churros.

  • Dumpling wrappers (about 10 sheets)
  • Brown sugar, 5 Tbsp
  • Cinnamon powder, 1 Tbsp
  • Cooking oil, for frying

First, let’s prepare the sweet cinnamon sugar coating. In a small bowl, combine 5 tablespoons of brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon powder. Mix them well. While the 5:1 ratio of brown sugar to cinnamon powder is generally considered the most delicious, feel free to adjust the cinnamon amount if you prefer a stronger cinnamon flavor. For an extra nutty aroma and taste, you can also add a pinch of ground peanuts to this mixture.

To help the churros seal and hold their shape while frying, you’ll need a little water. Prepare a small bowl of plain water. This simple step is crucial for success!

Place one dumpling wrapper flat on a clean cutting board or work surface.

Spoon about 1/3 of the prepared brown sugar and cinnamon mixture onto the center of the dumpling wrapper. Be careful not to overfill, as too much sugar can melt and leak out during frying.

Dip your fingertips lightly into the bowl of water. Gently brush the edges of the dumpling wrapper with the water. Applying a thin layer of water will help the wrapper seal securely when rolled, preventing it from coming undone during frying.

Carefully roll the dumpling wrapper tightly, similar to making a sushi roll or a spring roll. Ensure the filling is enclosed and press the seam to seal it. Rolling it tightly is key to prevent the sugar from leaking out and to maintain the churro’s shape.

Continue making as many dumpling wrapper churros as you desire. Typically, 10 wrappers will yield about 4-5 churros. You can adjust the quantity based on how many you want to make.

Pour a generous amount of cooking oil into a deep pan or pot and heat it over medium-high heat until it reaches frying temperature. Once the oil is hot (a small piece of wrapper should sizzle and float immediately), reduce the heat to medium-low. Frying at too high a temperature will burn the outside before the inside is cooked through.

Gently place the dumpling wrapper churros into the hot oil. Fry them for about 3-5 minutes, turning them occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides. Achieving a satisfying crispiness is the goal here.

Now, for the finishing touch! You can enjoy them as is for a less sweet option. If you prefer them sweeter, while the churros are still warm and slightly oily, roll them in the reserved brown sugar and cinnamon mixture. This will add an extra layer of sweetness and fragrant cinnamon. Enjoy these delightful treats while they’re warm for the ultimate crispy and chewy experience!
