Kentucky Chicken (Samgyetang) Recipe from the Movie ‘The Way Home’
Hello everyone! Today, we’re going to recreate the ‘Kentucky Chicken’ that made us salivate while watching the childhood movie ‘The Way Home.’ It’s actually the familiar Korean dish, Samgyetang, but in the movie, it felt like a special kind of chicken! Thinking of the young Yoo Seung-ho from back then brings back fond memories. I also recall Yoo Seung-ho visiting our military unit when I was a Sergeant. I was so surprised because the Samgyetang I made for the first time in my life was incredibly delicious! Nowadays, you can easily buy Samgyetang ingredient sets at the supermarket, making it simple to prepare at home. I even bought a whole chicken for about 4,000 won. Why not try recreating this warm and delicious memory with this recipe!

- Hovenia dulcis (Samgyetang ingredient set) 10g
Main Ingredients & Seasoning- Garlic 10 cloves (thinly sliced)
- 1 whole chicken, cleaned and prepared
- Salt (to taste) as needed
- 2 Tbsp perilla seed powder
- Garlic 10 cloves (thinly sliced)
- 1 whole chicken, cleaned and prepared
- Salt (to taste) as needed
- 2 Tbsp perilla seed powder
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
★ Making the Rich and Aromatic Broth: Place all the broth ingredients (Astragalus root, jujube dates, Aralia elata, kudzu vine, Angelica gigas, Korean angelica tree, Hovenia dulcis) into a pot. Add plenty of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium-low heat and simmer gently for 40 minutes to 1 hour to create a concentrated broth. For easier removal later, you can place the broth ingredients in a cheesecloth bag before simmering.
Step 2
★ Filling the Chicken Cavity: Take the cleaned chicken and generously stuff the sliced garlic inside its cavity. The garlic will help remove any gaminess from the chicken and add a wonderful depth of flavor.
Step 3
★ Simmering for Tender and Deep Flavors: Carefully place the garlic-stuffed chicken into the simmering broth made in Step 1. Ensure the chicken is fully submerged; add more water if necessary. Cover the pot and bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium-low heat and simmer for at least 1 hour, or until the chicken is completely cooked through and tender. Transfer the cooked chicken to a serving dish. Season with salt to your liking and sprinkle generously with perilla seed powder before enjoying. You’ve successfully made it!
