Special Fried Rice Made with Zingy Dorsan Kimchi
Transform delicious kimchi, which is a ‘rice thief’ even when eaten on its own, into a flavorful fried rice. Finely chop the pungent kimchi and stir-fry it with rice. Top with a fried egg, a drizzle of sesame oil, and some sesame seeds for an incredibly delicious kimchi fried rice. Let’s make this simple yet special dish!
Kimchi Fried Rice Ingredients- Generous amount of olive oil
- Generous amount of finely chopped kimchi (adjust seasoning if using aged kimchi)
- 2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp maple syrup (or 1/2 Tbsp sugar)
- 3 bowls of warm rice
- 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 2 fried eggs
- A little bit of sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Heat a wide pan over medium heat and add a generous amount of olive oil. Ensuring the pan is well-heated will prevent the ingredients from sticking and help achieve a fluffy texture.
Step 2
Add a generous portion of finely chopped kimchi to the pan. The amount of kimchi should be ample relative to the rice for a richer flavor. If your kimchi is very sour, you can adjust the sweetness with sugar or corn syrup.
Step 3
Before adding the kimchi to the pan, use a knife to mince it as finely as possible. This step ensures that the kimchi blends smoothly with the rice without any harsh textures.
Step 4
Drizzle 2 tablespoons of sesame oil evenly over the chopped kimchi. This will further enhance the kimchi’s aroma and flavor.
Step 5
Add 1 tablespoon of maple syrup for a touch of sweetness. If maple syrup is unavailable, about half a tablespoon of sugar can be used as a substitute. The balance of sourness from the kimchi and sweetness creates a delightful umami profile.
Step 6
Using a spatula, stir and stir-fry the kimchi, sesame oil, and maple syrup together for about 1-2 minutes until the kimchi softens and becomes fragrant. Once fragrant, add 3 bowls of warm rice. It’s best to gently break up the rice as you mix it in for a fluffy consistency.
Step 7
Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce over the rice. Oyster sauce adds a deep and rich umami flavor to the fried rice.
Step 8
Finally, add another tablespoon of sesame oil and continue to stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes, ensuring the rice grains are separated and fluffy. Adding sesame oil at the end helps preserve its aromatic qualities.
Step 9
Voila! Your delicious kimchi fried rice is ready. The pungent kimchi, savory oyster sauce, and nutty sesame oil create an appetizing sight and aroma.
Step 10
Serve the finished kimchi fried rice in a bowl, making it look as appealing as possible. The distinct texture of the kimchi pieces adds to the enjoyment.
Step 11
The crowning glory of this kimchi fried rice! Fry an egg sunny-side up and gently place it on top of the rice. Breaking the yolk and mixing it with the rice will add a wonderful creaminess.
Step 12
Finish with a sprinkle of sesame seeds for extra nutty flavor and visual appeal. Enjoy this delightful kimchi fried rice, perfect for when you need a special meal!
