Odeok Bokkeum (Stir-fried Fish Cakes) with Oyster Sauce: An Easy, Gourmet Side Dish Recipe

It’s a rainy day today! The rain was so heavy this morning that I couldn’t go outside, but now it’s light enough to step out. Yesterday, we enjoyed delicious seafood and chive pancakes in the pleasant weather. If only I had known it would rain today, I would have made those again, or perhaps my mother’s favorite, odeok bokkeum (stir-fried fish cakes). Odeok is a universally loved side dish that’s always delicious. My mother particularly loves fish cakes, so she always keeps them in the fridge and sometimes just pan-fries them with a little oil as a snack. Today, I’m sharing a recipe for a quick and easy odeok bokkeum made with only the versatile oyster sauce, without needing any other complex seasonings. With just oyster sauce, you can achieve a deep, savory flavor without the hassle of preparing soy sauce, sugar, and other ingredients. Let me show you how to make this incredibly delicious and simple odeok bokkeum right away!

  • Cooking : Stir-fry
  • Servings : 2 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 30 minutes

Main Ingredients

  • 4 sheets of fish cakes (e.g., oden)
  • 1 yellow bell pepper
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1/4 onion

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the vegetables. Slice the 1/4 onion into strips about 0.3 cm thick. Remove the seeds from the yellow and red bell peppers and slice them into similar 0.3 cm thick strips. The vibrant colors will make your stir-fried fish cakes look even more appetizing.

Step 1

Step 2

Next, cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. Slicing them into long strips about 0.5 cm wide will give them a pleasant texture and help them absorb the sauce well.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat a pan over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of cooking oil. Add the sliced onion and stir-fry until it becomes translucent and releases its sweet aroma. Sautéing the onion until it’s softened is key.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the onion starts to turn transparent, add the sliced fish cakes to the pan and stir-fry them together. Make sure to keep stirring to prevent the fish cakes from sticking to the pan.

Step 4

Step 5

When the fish cakes begin to turn golden brown, add the prepared yellow and red bell peppers. Bell peppers can become mushy if overcooked, so stir-fry them briefly with the fish cakes to maintain their crisp texture.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the vegetables and fish cakes are cooked to your liking, add 2 tablespoons of oyster sauce. It’s best to pour the oyster sauce around the edges of the pan to allow it to caramelize slightly before mixing. Stir everything together to ensure the savory oyster sauce evenly coats the ingredients.

Step 6

Step 7

When the oyster sauce has fully coated the ingredients and they look glossy, reduce the heat slightly and drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. The nutty aroma of the sesame oil will enhance the overall flavor of the dish.

Step 7

Step 8

Finally, sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of roasted sesame seeds and give it a quick toss for another moment. Your delicious oyster sauce odeok bokkeum is ready! It’s wonderful served hot, or you can let it cool slightly to enjoy as a side dish for the week. Enjoy this fantastic fish cake stir-fry that everyone in the family will love!
