Tteokbokki Ingredients

  • Bacon 90g (approx. 3-4 strips)
  • Tteokbokki Rice Cakes 200g (wheat or rice cakes)
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 1 Green Onion (scallion)
  • 3 Hard-boiled Eggs (optional, adjust to preference)

Spicy Sauce

  • Water 100ml (about 1/2 cup)
  • Soy Sauce 2 Tbsp
  • Gochujang (Korean chili paste) 1 Tbsp
  • Oligodang (corn syrup) 3 Tbsp (adjust sweetness to taste)
  • Minced Garlic 1/2 Tbsp
  • Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) 1 Tbsp
  • Sesame Seeds 1 tsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the eggs to add more flavor to the tteokbokki. Fill a pot with enough water to cover the eggs and bring it to a boil. Carefully add the eggs and simmer for about 6-7 minutes for perfectly soft-boiled eggs. Immediately rinsing the boiled eggs in cold water will make them easier to peel.

While the eggs are cooking, prepare the vegetables for the tteokbokki. Slice the onion into thick strips and cut the green onion diagonally into large pieces. Cutting the vegetables this way adds a pleasant texture and helps them absorb the tteokbokki sauce beautifully.

Rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes in cold water. Then, blanch them in boiling water for about 2 minutes until they become soft and pliable. This step prevents the rice cakes from becoming hard when stir-fried and ensures they absorb the sauce better. Drain the blanched rice cakes in a colander.

Time to make the delicious tteokbokki sauce! In a bowl, combine 100ml of water, 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp gochujang, 3 Tbsp oligodang, 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, and 1 tsp sesame seeds. Whisk everything together until well combined and smooth. Pre-mixing the sauce will save you time during cooking.

Now, let’s cook the star ingredient: bacon! Heat a shallow pan over medium heat without adding any oil. Cook the bacon until it’s golden brown and slightly crispy. Cutting the bacon into 2-inch pieces before cooking makes it easier to eat. The savory flavor of the bacon will infuse the tteokbokki, creating a special taste.

Once the bacon is nicely browned, transfer it to a plate lined with paper towels to drain off excess grease. This will help prevent the tteokbokki from becoming too greasy.

Don’t discard the bacon drippings left in the pan! Use this flavorful fat to sauté the vegetables. Add the sliced onion and green onion to the pan and stir-fry over medium heat until they are about 80% cooked and slightly softened.

When the vegetables are slightly golden and about 80% cooked, pour in the prepared spicy sauce. Stir everything together to coat the vegetables evenly and let the sauce cook for a minute.

Finally, add the blanched tteokbokki rice cakes to the pan. Stir-fry everything together for another 2-3 minutes, or until the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened to your liking. Serve your delicious bacon tteokbokki hot, perhaps with the prepared soft-boiled eggs on the side for an even heartier meal!
