Main Ingredients

  • 1 block Tofu (approx. 300-350g)
  • 1/6 Carrot (approx. 30g)
  • 1/3 Green Onion (approx. 30g)
  • 1/2 Onion (approx. 50g)

Golden Sauce

  • 5 Tbsp Soy Sauce (approx. 75ml)
  • 1/4 Tbsp Cooking Wine (Mirin) (approx. 3.75ml)
  • 1/2 Tbsp Sugar (approx. 7.5g)
  • 1/2 Tbsp Minced Garlic (approx. 7.5g)
  • 1/2 Tbsp Corn Syrup (or Honey) (approx. 7.5g)
  • 1.5 Tbsp Red Pepper Flakes (Gochugaru) (approx. 15g)
  • 6 Tbsp Water (approx. 90ml)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, gently press the tofu with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Then, cut it into bite-sized pieces (about 1.5 cm thick, rectangular shapes). Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a wide pan over medium heat. Place the cut tofu into the hot pan and fry until golden brown on both sides. Be careful when flipping the tofu to prevent it from breaking.

Step 1

Step 2

While the tofu is frying, let’s make the delicious sauce! In a small bowl, combine 5 Tbsp soy sauce, 1/4 Tbsp cooking wine (mirin), 1/2 Tbsp sugar, 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, 1/2 Tbsp corn syrup, 1.5 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru), and 6 Tbsp water. Stir well with a spoon until the sugar dissolves. You can adjust the sweetness and saltiness of the sauce to your preference for an even tastier dish.

Step 2

Step 3

Next, prepare the vegetables. Wash the carrot thoroughly and julienne it thinly. Peel and thinly slice the onion into similar strips. For the green onion, instead of chopping it finely, slice it diagonally into longer pieces; this helps it maintain its shape nicely while braising.

Step 3

Step 4

Now it’s time to bring all the ingredients together for a harmonious flavor. Arrange the golden-brown fried tofu neatly in the pan. Pour the prepared sauce evenly over the tofu. Then, artfully place the julienned carrot, sliced onion, and diagonally sliced green onion on top.

Step 4

Step 5

The tofu has already been pan-fried to a golden brown in Step 1. (Since it was browned in the previous step, no further frying is needed.)

Step 5

Step 6

Now that all the ingredients and the sauce are ready, it’s time to develop those delicious flavors. Pour all the prepared sauce over the pan-fried tofu. To ensure the sauce coats the tofu thoroughly, you can tilt the pan slightly as you pour.

Step 6

Step 7

This is the final step to complete your delicious braised tofu. Keep the heat on medium, and let it simmer slowly until the liquid reduces and the sauce thickens, coating the tofu. To prevent sticking or burning, gently stir the tofu occasionally or spoon some of the sauce over it. It’s ready when the sauce becomes slightly syrupy and the ingredients look glossy.

Step 7

Step 8

Voilà! Your mouth-watering braised tofu is perfectly cooked. Serve it over warm rice and enjoy this satisfying meal that’s loved by everyone, young and old!
