  • Category : Main dish
  • Ingredient Category : Eggs / Dairy
  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Pan-fry
  • Servings : 4 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 30 minutes
  • Difficulty : Beginner

Ingredients

  • 6 Eggs
  • 3-4 Tbsp minced carrot
  • 3 Tbsp minced green onion
  • 1.5 Tbsp cooking wine (mirin)
  • 1/3 tsp Salt
  • 100g Spam
  • A little cooking oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare 6 eggs and one small can of Spam. Add 1.5 Tbsp of cooking wine (mirin) to remove any eggy smell and 1/3 tsp of salt. (Optional: For a hint of sweetness, you can add 1/2 tsp of sugar. Alternatively, a small amount of soy sauce like ‘Tsuyu’ can add a savory sweetness instead of salt. Here, we’re using just salt and cooking wine to highlight the ingredients’ natural flavors.)

Step 1

Step 2

For the vegetables, we’re using carrots and green onions. You can also add onions or substitute green onions with chives, depending on what you have available.

Step 2

Step 3

There’s no strict rule for the amount of Spam; you can use a thick piece or just a small amount thinly sliced. It’s also delicious if you omit the Spam and just roll the eggs thickly. Slice the Spam to fit the length of your pan.

Step 3

Step 4

Crack the 6 eggs into a bowl. Add 1.5 Tbsp of cooking wine and 1/3 tsp of salt. Be mindful that Spam is already salty, so use a small amount of salt.

Step 4

Step 5

Instead of the often-skipped straining step for a smoother texture, we’ll simply whisk the eggs well with chopsticks. Cooking should be simple and enjoyable! This method is sufficient for achieving a well-beaten egg mixture.

Step 5

Step 6

Add the finely chopped vegetables (carrots and green onions) to the beaten egg mixture and gently stir to combine everything evenly.

Step 6

Step 7

Heat a little cooking oil in a non-stick pan, spread it evenly, and heat the pan further.

Step 7

Step 8

Reduce the heat to medium-low. Pour a thin layer of the egg mixture into the pan and cook. Since we’ll be rolling it multiple times to create a thick omelet, it’s crucial to cook it slowly over low heat to prevent burning.

Step 8

Step 9

When about one-third of the egg layer is cooked, gently place the sliced Spam onto it. Press it down slightly to help it adhere to the egg.

Step 9

Step 10

Once the egg layer is cooked and starts to lift from the pan, begin to carefully roll it up.

Step 10

Step 11

Roll the omelet, tucking the Spam inside. As you roll, pull the omelet towards the front edge of the pan to make space for the next layer.

Step 11

Step 12

Pour more egg mixture into the space created at the front. Pour just enough to cover the rolled part and the exposed pan surface.

Step 12

Step 13

Continue this process: pour egg mixture, let it cook slightly, roll forward, and repeat. Keep rolling the omelet layer by layer.

Step 13

Step 14

The rolled omelet is now complete. Cooking slowly over low heat has ensured it holds its shape firmly without falling apart.

Step 14

Step 15

To ensure neat slices, let the rolled omelet cool down slightly on a cutting board before cutting. Cutting it immediately might cause it to lose its shape.

Step 15

Step 16

Slice the omelet into pieces about 2cm thick. You’ll see the delicious Spam perfectly nestled inside, creating a beautiful and tasty side dish. It’s so good, you can eat it without rice! This universally loved dish is perfect for picnic lunchboxes. Eggs are packed with protein and nutrients, making them a great addition to meals for growing children. Try making this nutritious and visually appealing Spam and Vegetable Rolled Omelet, a wonderful homemade dish!
