This past New Year’s, I decided to make steak bites for our home party, and they truly added to the festive atmosphere and tasted wonderfully! This recipe is perfect for creating a special occasion meal.

Main Ingredients

  • Beef sirloin 500g (cut into steak bite size)
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 10 Korean green chili peppers (Ggwari peppers)
  • 2 Bell peppers (use various colors for a vibrant dish)
  • Cooking oil, as needed
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • A pinch of salt

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the vegetables that will add color and texture to your steak bites. Dice half an onion into bite-sized pieces. Remove the stems from the 10 Korean green chili peppers and cut them into manageable sizes. Deseed the 2 bell peppers and cut them into similar-sized pieces as the onion. Using different colored bell peppers will make the final dish visually appealing.

Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a wide pan over medium-high heat. Add the prepared onion, green chili peppers, and bell peppers. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper, and stir-fry until the vegetables are slightly softened but still retain some crispness. Sautéing the vegetables will bring out their natural sweetness.

Once the vegetables are lightly sautéed, transfer them to a separate bowl. This step helps maintain the vegetables’ texture, preventing them from becoming too soft when cooked with the steak.

Now, let’s prepare the special sauce that will elevate the flavor of your steak bites. This sauce is key to achieving a rich and delicious taste.

In a small bowl, combine 4 tablespoons of steak sauce, 2 tablespoons of red wine, and 1 tablespoon of ketchup. Whisk everything together until well combined. For a touch of sweetness or added depth, you can also add a little sugar or oyster sauce, if desired.

Cut the beef sirloin into bite-sized cubes for the steak bites. Reheat the pan, and this time, sear the beef over high heat. This quick searing process is crucial for locking in the juices and ensuring a tender texture.

Add a knob of butter to the pan and let it melt. This will add a wonderful richness and aroma to the beef. Once the butter is melted, add the cubed beef to the pan in a single layer. Sear each side until nicely browned. Be careful not to overcook; aiming for medium-rare to medium will yield the most tender and flavorful results.

Once the beef is cooked to your desired doneness, add the sautéed vegetables back into the pan.
