Tofu Donut Ingredients

  • 1 block (approx. 300g) mashed tofu, well-drained
  • 2 cups pancake mix (using a standard paper cup for measurement)
  • 1-2 Tbsp water (to adjust dough consistency)
  • A little extra flour for dusting
  • Vegetable oil for frying (generous amount)
  • Sugar or powdered sugar for dusting (optional, for finishing)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare all the ingredients for your delicious tofu donuts. Ensure the tofu is well-drained, and have your pancake mix, dusting flour, water, and sugar measured and ready.

Step 1

Step 2

Place the drained tofu in a cheesecloth or a clean kitchen towel. Squeeze out as much water as possible by pressing down firmly, almost as if wringing out tears. Removing excess moisture is key to achieving a non-sticky dough and nicely shaped donuts.

Step 2

Step 3

Transfer the well-drained tofu to a mixing bowl. Add 2 cups of pancake mix (measured with a paper cup). Mix and knead the ingredients together with a spatula or your hands until a cohesive dough forms. You can also use donut mix if you have it.

Step 3

Step 4

Check the dough’s consistency. If it seems too dry and isn’t coming together, gradually add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water, mixing until the dough reaches a soft, slightly sticky texture. Be careful not to make it too wet.

Step 4

Step 5

Lightly dust your work surface (like a cutting board) with extra flour. This will prevent the dough from sticking. You can use any type of flour, such as pancake mix or all-purpose flour.

Step 5

Step 6

Lightly dust your hands with flour as well. Take portions of the dough and roll them into small balls. Place the dough balls on the floured surface and gently press them down with your palm to flatten them into discs.

Step 6

Step 7

Now it’s time to create the signature donut hole! Using a cap (like a bottle cap from a beverage), press down firmly in the center of each flattened dough disc to form a donut shape. The size of the hole will depend on the cap you use, so feel free to use any suitable tool you have at home to make charming donut shapes.

Step 7

Step 8

Pour a generous amount of vegetable oil into a deep pan or pot for frying. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches approximately 160°C (320°F). Maintaining the correct oil temperature is important to prevent the donuts from absorbing too much oil.

Step 8

Step 9

Once the oil has reached the desired temperature, reduce the heat to medium-low. Carefully place the shaped donuts into the hot oil and begin frying. Maintaining a steady, moderate temperature is crucial.

Step 9

Step 10

Fry the donuts for about 4 to 5 minutes on medium-low heat, turning them occasionally, until they are golden brown and cooked through. Be mindful of the heat to ensure the outsides don’t burn before the insides are cooked.

Step 10

Step 11

Remove the fried tofu donuts from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess grease. Transfer them to a serving plate. While still warm, sprinkle with sugar or dust with powdered sugar to your preference. Your delicious, soft, and savory tofu donuts are now ready to enjoy!
