Main Ingredients

  • 10 fresh perilla leaves (Kkaennip)
  • 1/4 medium onion
  • 1/2 stalk green onion

Seasoning Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp raw sugar (or granulated sugar)
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp red pepper flakes (Gochugaru)
  • Sesame seeds (toasted), for garnish

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, wash the perilla leaves thoroughly and pat them dry. Thinly slice the onion and finely chop the green onion. Now, let’s prepare the flavorful seasoning sauce. In a small bowl, combine 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp raw sugar (or granulated sugar), 1 Tbsp minced garlic, and 2 Tbsp red pepper flakes. Mix well. If the sauce seems too thick, add about 1-2 teaspoons of water to reach your desired consistency.

Step 1

Step 2

Lay the sliced onions and chopped green onions at the bottom of your steaming pot or a wide, shallow pan. This layer helps prevent the perilla leaves from sticking and burning, and it infuses them with the natural sweetness of the vegetables. Next, carefully arrange the cleaned perilla leaves on top of the vegetable layer.

Step 2

Step 3

Evenly drizzle the prepared seasoning sauce over the arranged perilla leaves. Gently spread the sauce to ensure it coats each leaf and seeps between them. You can use your hands to carefully spread it or gently shake the pot to distribute the sauce evenly. Be careful not to clump the sauce.

Step 3

Step 4

Cover the pot with a lid and bring it to a boil over high heat. Once it starts steaming, reduce the heat to medium. Let it steam for about 5-7 minutes, or until the perilla leaves are tender and have absorbed the flavors of the sauce. Turn off the heat, remove the lid, and serve immediately while warm. Garnish with a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds, if desired.
