  • Servings : 4 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 30 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Main Ingredients

  • 500g Tteokguk rice cakes (refrigerated or frozen)
  • 4 sheets of square fish cakes
  • 12 Vienna sausages (or your favorite sausages)
  • 1/2 stalk of green onion
  • 700ml water
  • A pinch of toasted sesame seeds (for garnish)

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 heaping Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the tteokguk rice cakes. If they are stuck together, place them in a sieve and rinse under running cold water, gently separating them. Softer rice cakes will absorb the tteokbokki sauce better. If using frozen rice cakes, thaw them beforehand or blanch them briefly in boiling water.

Step 1

Step 2

Cut the green onion into large, diagonal pieces. This will add a wonderful aroma and sweetness as it cooks.

Step 2

Step 3

Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. Score the Vienna sausages about 3-4 times; this helps them cook evenly and absorb the sauce beautifully. Feel free to add other ingredients like ham, bacon, or dumplings!

Step 3

Step 4

Now, let’s make the tteokbokki sauce. Pour 700ml of water into a pot and bring it to a boil over high heat. Once the water is boiling vigorously, add the rinsed tteokguk rice cakes.

Step 4

Step 5

When the water returns to a boil, add all the prepared seasoning ingredients. Stir well to dissolve any clumps: 3 Tbsp sugar, 2 Tbsp gochugaru, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp fish sauce, and 1 heaping Tbsp gochujang. Ensure the sauce is evenly mixed.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the sauce starts boiling again, reduce the heat to medium. Add the cut fish cakes and sausages. Stir occasionally to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Simmer for about 5-7 minutes over medium heat until the ingredients are well coated with the sauce.

Step 6

Step 7

The tteokbokki is almost ready when the sauce has thickened to a rich, glossy consistency, and the rice cakes, fish cakes, and sausages are deeply flavored. Finally, add the large pieces of green onion and cook for another 1-2 minutes to infuse their fresh aroma. Remove from heat, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds, and enjoy your delicious tteokbokki!
