Quick & Delicious Rice Cake Stir-fry (Mil Tteokbokki)
Easy & Flavorful Mil Tteokbokki Recipe
Here’s a favorite dish I often make for my husband, who absolutely loves tteokbokki! We particularly enjoy the long, thin rice cakes (mil tteok) because they soak up the sauce so beautifully, making every bite incredibly flavorful. This recipe will guide you through creating a delicious tteokbokki that rivals your favorite restaurant, right in your own kitchen. It’s simple, comforting, and packed with taste!
Main Ingredients- 500g Mil Tteokbokki Rice Cakes (long, thin type recommended)
- 4 sheets Fish Cakes (Eomuk)
- 1/4 Onion
- Cabbage (to taste)
- 1 Anchovy & Kelp Broth Pack (for soup base)
Sauce Ingredients- 2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce (Ganjang)
- 3 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp Curry Powder (for an extra flavor boost!)
- 2 Tbsp Black Pepper Powder (generous amount for a distinct peppery kick!)
- 2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce (Ganjang)
- 3 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp Curry Powder (for an extra flavor boost!)
- 2 Tbsp Black Pepper Powder (generous amount for a distinct peppery kick!)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s create the flavorful base for our tteokbokki. In 800ml of water, add the broth pack. Bring it to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 minutes to extract all the delicious flavors from the pack. Then, remove and discard the broth pack, leaving you with a clean, savory broth.
Step 2
Now, let’s prepare the stars of our dish: the rice cakes and fish cakes. Rinse the mil tteok (rice cakes) thoroughly under running water. Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces or your preferred shapes, such as triangles or long strips.
Step 3
We’ll also prepare some vegetables to add texture and flavor. Thinly slice or dice the 1/4 onion. Cut the cabbage into thick shreds, according to your preference. Adding vegetables makes the tteokbokki even more satisfying.
Step 4
Time to make the delicious sauce! Combine 2 Tbsp Gochujang, 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce, 3 Tbsp Sugar, 1 Tbsp Gochugaru, 1 Tbsp Curry Powder, and 2 Tbsp Black Pepper Powder in a bowl. Mix them well until there are no lumps. Mixing the sauce beforehand ensures it coats the rice cakes evenly.
Step 5
Pour the prepared sauce into the savory broth and stir to combine. Add the prepared onion, cabbage, and the mil tteok. Since these rice cakes are thin, they cook quickly, so simmer for about 2 minutes, or until they just start to become tender.
Step 6
Once the rice cakes are starting to soften, add the cut fish cakes. Continue to simmer for about 5 more minutes. This allows the fish cakes to absorb the delicious sauce, making them extra flavorful.
Step 7
Finally, generously add the black pepper powder to enhance the aroma. I used pure black pepper here to highlight its natural flavor, but you can also use freshly ground black pepper if you prefer. The sharp aroma of pepper will perfectly complement the sweet and spicy flavors of the tteokbokki.
Step 8
If you were planning to add boiled eggs, don’t worry if you forgot them! It’s perfectly fine. You can enjoy them on the side or dip them into the rich tteokbokki sauce – they taste amazing either way.
Step 9
Voila! Your delicious Quick & Flavorful Mil Tteokbokki is ready. The chewy rice cakes, hearty vegetables, and savory sauce combine to create a delightful dish perfect for the whole family. Enjoy your meal!
