  • Seaweed (Mi-yeok)
  • Korean Green Chilies (Cheongnyang)
  • Garlic

  • Ssamjang (Fermented Soybean Paste – Optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Even if you’re new to Gwamegi or don’t usually enjoy it, you can savor it deliciously with fresh wrap vegetables! Prepare your favorite wrap greens. Fresh lettuce, cabbage, or any other greens work well. Make sure to wash them thoroughly and drain them completely to best appreciate the Gwamegi’s flavor.

Step 1

Step 2

I particularly prepared some baby napa cabbage, which has a wonderfully sweet flavor. Its tender leaves add a delightful sweetness that enhances the Gwamegi when wrapped together.

Step 2

Step 3

If you have fresh green onions, chop them into bite-sized pieces to add a refreshing aroma and a hint of pungency that complements the Gwamegi.

Step 3

Step 4

An essential combination for enjoying Gwamegi! Finely chop the Korean green chilies for a spicy kick, and thinly slice the garlic to preserve its fresh flavor. Adding these to your wraps cuts through any richness and balances the flavors beautifully.

Step 4

Step 5

I used salted sea tangle that I had at home. If using salted sea tangle, soak it in water until the saltiness is completely removed, then rinse it several times under running water and drain well. Its chewy and slightly crisp texture is a fantastic match for Gwamegi. If using fresh sea tangle, simply rinse and use.

Step 5

Step 6

I also prepared some fresh seaweed (mi-yeok) to add another layer of oceanic flavor. Wash the mi-yeok clean and cut it into easy-to-eat pieces.

Step 6

Step 7

Here’s the star of the show: Gwamegi! For two people, 5 to 6 pieces are usually a generous portion. Since I bought pre-prepared Gwamegi, I just need to cut it into bite-sized pieces. Avoid cutting it too small, as you might miss out on its distinct flavor. Slicing it moderately thick ensures a satisfying chew and a rich taste.

Step 7

Step 8

Arrange the prepared fresh wrap vegetables, sea vegetables, and the cut Gwamegi attractively on a plate. Serve with the sweet and tangy Gochujang sauce and, if desired, ssamjang. This completes a delightful and abundant Gwamegi feast. Enjoy the taste of the season!
