Sparkling & Refreshing! Super Easy Tomato Smoothie
Create a Zesty Tomato Smoothie at Home!
My son drinks cold beverages year-round, so one shelf of my freezer is always stocked with frozen fruits. I often make smoothies or juices for him from these fruits, and he especially loves when I blend green grapes with Sprite or cider – it’s delicious! This got me wondering if tomatoes might pair well with carbonated drinks too. The result? A wonderfully zesty and refreshing smoothie that I highly recommend! It’s incredibly simple to make, perfect for anyone to follow.
Key Ingredients- 3 ripe medium tomatoes
- 500ml chilled Sprite or 7-Up
- Fresh mint leaves (for garnish)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Start by washing the tomatoes. Fill a bowl with water, add a tablespoon of baking soda, and let the tomatoes soak for about 10 minutes. Afterwards, rinse them thoroughly under cold running water and carefully remove the stems.
Step 2
To make peeling easier, score the top of each tomato with a shallow cross cut using a knife. Be careful not to cut too deep; you only want to break the skin.
Step 3
Next, blanch the tomatoes. Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. Gently place the scored tomatoes into the boiling water. As soon as you see the skin starting to split or peel away (usually after about 30-60 seconds), carefully remove them. Don’t overcook them, as they can become mushy.
Step 4
Immediately transfer the blanched tomatoes into an ice bath. This sudden cooling helps loosen the skins further, making them incredibly easy to peel. Once cooled, gently slip the skins off. If any part is stubborn, you can carefully peel it away with your fingers.
Step 5
After peeling, cut the tomatoes into quarters. Remove the tough core area if necessary.
Step 6
For a colder and more intensely flavored smoothie, freeze the tomatoes. Place the quartered tomato pieces into a zip-top bag or an airtight container and freeze completely. It’s best to freeze them for at least 4 hours, or until solid.
Step 7
While you can blend them directly from frozen, letting the tomatoes sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes can make them easier to blend, especially if your blender isn’t very powerful. If you choose to do this, give them another quick chop into smaller pieces before blending.
Step 8
Now it’s time to combine everything in the blender. Pour the chilled 500ml of Sprite into the blender jar first. This helps the blades move more freely. Then, add the frozen tomato pieces.
Step 9
Blend until smooth! Secure the lid on the blender and process until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy. If the smoothie is too thick, add a little more Sprite; if it’s too thin, add a few more frozen tomato pieces and blend again until you reach your desired consistency.
Step 10
Voilà! Your incredibly simple and refreshing tomato smoothie is ready! Even though it’s so easy, presenting it in a nice glass with a fresh mint leaf on top makes it look wonderfully elegant, just like something from a cafe. Enjoy this cool and zesty treat!
