Ingredients

  • 1 bowl of warm cooked rice
  • 1 Tbsp seasoned seaweed flakes (like ‘Japchae Kim’ or similar)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp perilla oil
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, take a bowl of warm cooked rice and mix in 1 tablespoon of seasoned seaweed flakes. The quality of pre-packaged ingredients these days is quite impressive! If you don’t have seasoned seaweed flakes, you can also use crushed dried seaweed (gim). (If using plain crushed seaweed, consider adding a pinch of sesame seeds and salt, and perhaps some scrambled egg for extra flavor and texture).

Step 1

Step 2

Season the rice with 1/4 teaspoon of salt. However, since the seasoned seaweed flakes already contain salt, you can omit the added salt if you prefer a milder taste.

Step 2

Step 3

Add 1 tablespoon of perilla oil and mix everything together thoroughly until well combined. The nutty aroma of perilla oil will beautifully infuse the rice.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, shape the seasoned rice into bite-sized, round rice balls. These are perfectly sized for little hands to hold and eat easily.

Step 4

Step 5

In a separate bowl, crack 1 egg and add a pinch of salt. Whisk it well. It’s helpful to break down the chalazae (the stringy bits) for a smoother, more uniform egg mixture.

Step 5

Step 6

Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Pour a ladleful of the whisked egg mixture into the pan and spread it out into a long, thin omelet.

Step 6

Step 7

Carefully place one of the prepared rice balls onto the cooked egg. Gently roll the egg around the rice ball, like wrapping a sushi roll, and fry until golden brown on all sides, similar to making a savory pancake (jeon).

Step 7

Step 8

These perfectly bite-sized treats are sure to be a hit with children. They also make an excellent addition to lunchboxes and are a quick, convenient meal when you’re short on side dishes.

Step 8

Step 9

They taste fantastic when served with kimchi! While they might not look as polished as a sushi roll, with a little decorative flair, they can be just as appealing and satisfying.

Step 9

Step 10

For a final touch, I’ve finely chopped some kimchi and sprinkled it on top of the fried egg-wrapped rice balls. This way, you get a balanced meal with rice, egg, and kimchi all in one bite, making it a hassle-free option for busy mornings.
