Ingredients

  • 1 slice of bread (your preferred thickness)
  • 1 fresh egg
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of black pepper (optional)
  • Dried parsley flakes (for garnish and flavor)
  • Butter, softened

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the butter. Take your butter out of the refrigerator about 20-30 minutes before you start so it softens to room temperature. This makes it much easier to spread thinly and evenly onto the bread.

Step 1

Step 2

Once softened, place a generous amount of butter onto the slice of bread. Using a spatula or knife, spread it evenly all the way to the edges. This will ensure a delicious golden crust when toasted.

Step 2

Step 3

Next, trim off the crusts from all four sides of the bread. Aim to cut off about a 1cm border. This step helps create a neat shape for our ‘bread bowl’.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, on the inside of the bread, make a shallow cut. Angle your knife slightly and cut about 1.5cm deep into the bread, creating a square or rectangle shape within the bread. Be careful not to cut all the way through the base of the bread. Do this on all four sides.

Step 4

Step 5

Gently fold the bread inwards along the cut lines, creating a border. Press down firmly with your fingers to seal the edges. The butter you spread earlier will help the bread stick together, forming a cozy ‘bowl’ to hold the egg.

Step 5

Step 6

Ta-da! You’ve successfully created a charming bread bowl. It’s now ready to be filled with a delicious egg.

Step 6

Step 7

Carefully crack an egg and separate the yolk. Gently place just the egg yolk into the center of the bread bowl. Try to avoid getting too much egg white into the bowl, as we want the yolk to be the star.

Step 7

Step 8

To prevent the yolk from potentially bursting in the oven (which can make cleanup a bit tricky), gently poke the center of the yolk with the tip of a fork. This small step helps the yolk cook evenly without over-inflating.

Step 8

Step 9

Season the yolk with a pinch of salt and a sprinkle of black pepper, according to your preference. For a lovely touch of color and extra flavor, dust with some dried parsley flakes.

Step 9

Step 10

Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 10 minutes. Keep an eye on it; you want the egg yolk to be cooked to your liking (sunny-side up is ideal) and the bread edges to be golden brown and crispy. Oven temperatures can vary, so adjust the time as needed. Serve immediately and enjoy!
