Making Spam Heart Kimbap for My Husband’s Lunchbox

Heartwarming Spam Heart Kimbap

I’m packing a lunchbox for my husband to enjoy at work. He loves thick kimbap, so I’ve made a substantial one using Spam, shaped into a cute heart for a special touch!

Kimbap Ingredients

  • 3 sheets of kimbap seaweed (gim)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 can (approx. 200g) of Spam
  • A pinch of salt
  • A little sesame oil
  • 1 serving of cooked rice (approx. 210g)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the kimbap seaweed sheets. Cut each sheet in half. This will help create a nice heart shape without making the kimbap too large.

Step 1

Step 2

Lightly oil a pan and add the 2 beaten eggs. Whisk them gently as they cook to create soft scrambled eggs. Avoid overcooking to maintain a tender texture. The goal is fluffy, not dry, scrambled eggs.

Step 2

Step 3

Season the warm cooked rice with a pinch of salt and a drizzle of sesame oil. Mixing while the rice is hot ensures the seasoning is evenly distributed. Gently fold in the prepared scrambled eggs.

Step 3

Step 4

Divide the Spam into three equal portions. Pan-fry them over low heat until golden brown. Cooking Spam over low heat is key – it allows excess fat to render out, resulting in a crispy exterior and a tender, flavorful interior.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the Spam is nicely browned, slice it at a slight angle to help form the heart shape. Let it cool slightly before assembling the kimbap to make shaping easier and prevent it from falling apart.

Step 5

Step 6

Now, let’s create the heart shape! Spread a thin layer of the seasoned rice onto a half-sheet of kimbap seaweed. Place the sliced Spam on top, arranging it in a heart shape. Ensure the Spam is centered and secure.

Step 6

Step 7

Cover the Spam with more of the seasoned rice, filling in the space above the heart shape. Be careful not to overfill, as this can cause the kimbap to break. Packing the rice around the Spam will help define the heart.

Step 7

Step 8

Finally, tightly roll up the kimbap. You can moisten the edge of the seaweed with a little water or sesame oil to help seal it securely. And there you have it – your delicious Spam heart kimbap is ready!
