Soft and Fluffy French Toast
Easy Homemade French Toast Recipe Using Leftover Bread
Don’t throw away that leftover bread! With just eggs and milk, you can create a wonderful brunch dish: moist and tender French toast. Here’s a simple bread and egg toast recipe that’s perfect with jam or on its own.
French Toast Ingredients- 2 slices of bread (approx. 1-2 cm thick)
- 2 large eggs
- 30ml milk (or soy milk)
- 15g unsalted butter
- 0.8 tsp sugar (approx. 4g)
- 0.15 tsp salt (approx. 1g)
- Pinch of cinnamon powder (optional)
- Pinch of powdered sugar (for dusting)
Optional Fruit Garnish- 3-4 cherry tomatoes
- 3-4 cherry tomatoes
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Crack 2 eggs into a shallow bowl or tray. Add 0.15 tsp of salt to help balance the flavor and reduce any eggy smell.
Step 2
For a touch of sweetness, add 0.8 tsp of sugar and mix it in.
Step 3
If you enjoy a hint of spice, sprinkle in a pinch of cinnamon powder. Cinnamon adds a sophisticated aroma and flavor to French toast, but feel free to omit it if it’s not to your taste.
Step 4
Pour in 30ml of milk. While whole milk is recommended for the best texture, you can substitute with soy milk if that’s what you have on hand.
Step 5
Using a fork or whisk, beat the eggs, milk, sugar, and salt together until well combined and smooth, creating an even custard mixture. Ensure there are no lumps for even coating.
Step 6
Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides thoroughly. Make sure the bread absorbs the custard well.
Step 7
Let the bread slices soak in the egg mixture for about 1-2 minutes, resting them in the bowl or tray. This soaking step is key to achieving a moist and tender interior.
Step 8
Melt 15g of butter in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Be careful not to let the butter burn.
Step 9
Once the butter is melted and shimmering, carefully place the custard-soaked bread slices into the pan.
Step 10
Managing the heat is crucial. Since the bread is saturated with custard, high heat can cause the outside to burn before the inside cooks. Cook over medium or medium-low heat to ensure an even golden-brown color without burning.
Step 11
Once one side is golden brown, gently flip the bread and cook the other side until equally golden and cooked through. Remove from heat once both sides are beautifully browned.
Step 12
Place the cooked French toast on a plate. For an appealing presentation, you can add optional garnishes like cherry tomatoes or your favorite fruits, such as strawberries or bananas.
Step 13
Finally, dust with a sprinkle of powdered sugar for a delightful finish. Your delicious, soft French toast is ready to be enjoyed!
