Main Ingredients

  • 2 potatoes (approx. 200g)
  • 3 pinches of salt
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 3 Tbsp potato starch
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, we need to cook the potatoes until they are soft. Prepare 2 potatoes (about 200g), cut them in half, and place them in the inner pot of your rice cooker. Add water to about half the height of the potatoes, and use the ‘Multi-Cook’ or ‘Steam’ function for 20 minutes. When steaming in a rice cooker, less moisture in the cooked potatoes will result in a less mushy texture for the Gamjatteok, making it chewier. If your rice cooker doesn’t have this function, you can cut the potatoes into appropriate sizes, place them in a microwave-safe bowl, add a little water, cover with plastic wrap, poke a few holes, and microwave for 8 minutes until cooked.

Step 1

Step 2

If steaming potatoes separately feels like too much trouble or you’re concerned about electricity costs, try steaming them with rice! Wash 1 serving (about 100g) of rice and put it in the inner pot of the rice cooker. Add water as you normally would for cooking rice. Then, cut the potatoes into quarters and place them on top of the rice. Cook using the ‘White Rice’ or ‘Quick Cook’ setting. The potatoes will be cooked softly while the rice is being prepared.

Step 2

Step 3

Carefully remove the potatoes cooked with the rice. Select the amount of potatoes equivalent to 2 potatoes for the Gamjatteok, and the remaining potatoes can be mixed with the rice and seasoned to make a delicious rice dish. For the seasoning sauce, you’ll need: 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes, 1/4 tsp garlic powder (or 1 tsp minced garlic), 1 tsp sesame oil, a little chopped green onion, and some toasted sesame seeds.

Step 3

Step 4

Take out 2 potatoes’ worth of cooked potato (about 8 pieces) from the rice or from when they were steamed/boiled.

Step 4

Step 5

While the potatoes are still hot, transfer them to a bowl suitable for mashing and use the back of a spoon to press them down firmly until they are smoothly mashed. It’s important to mash them without any lumps.

Step 5

Step 6

Add 2 Tbsp of sugar to the mashed potatoes for sweetness, 3 pinches of salt to adjust the seasoning, and 3 Tbsp of potato starch to achieve the chewy texture of the tteok.

Step 6

Step 7

Now, knead the mixture with your hands or mix vigorously with a spatula until all the ingredients are well combined and no dry powder is visible. Aim for a smooth dough consistency. This thorough mixing is key!

Step 7

Step 8

Coat the bottom of the rice cooker’s inner pot with 2 Tbsp of cooking oil. This will prevent the Gamjatteok from sticking to the bottom.

Step 8

Step 9

Take a handful of the dough and shape it into a round, flat disk. If the dough sticks to your hands, lightly oiling them will make the process much easier. Tip: Adding chewy cheese or red bean paste inside the dough before shaping makes them extra delicious!

Step 9

Step 10

Arrange the 5 prepared Gamjatteok pieces neatly in the rice cooker’s inner pot. (Approximately 5 pieces will be made from 200g of potatoes.) Cook for 9 minutes using the ‘Reheat’ or ‘Steam’ function of the rice cooker.

Step 10

Step 11

Freshly cooked Gamjatteok might feel a bit soft, but they become firmer and chewier as they cool down. Once cooked, let them cool slightly before inverting the rice cooker onto a plate. Finally, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for a nutty flavor and enjoy!
