Main Ingredients

  • 500g Sundae (Korean blood sausage)

Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp Cooking oil
  • 0.5 Tbsp Minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp Water
  • 2 Tbsp Mirin (rice wine)
  • 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (red pepper flakes)
  • 1 Tbsp Gochujang (red pepper paste)
  • 0.5 Tbsp Ketchup
  • 3 Tbsp Corn syrup
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Bring a pot of water to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low, just enough to maintain a gentle simmer. Place the sundae in the steamer basket and steam for 15 minutes until cooked through. Important tip: If the packaging doesn’t specify that it can be steamed in its plastic casing, please remove the plastic before steaming for safety.

Step 1

Step 2

After steaming, briefly rinse the sundae under cold running water. This quick rinse helps the sundae firm up, giving it a wonderfully chewy and satisfying texture that enhances its flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, let’s prepare the irresistible sauce! In a pan, heat 1 Tbsp of cooking oil over low heat. Add 0.5 Tbsp of minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add 2 Tbsp water, 2 Tbsp mirin, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp gochujang, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, 0.5 Tbsp ketchup, 3 Tbsp corn syrup, and 1 Tbsp sugar. Stir everything together until well combined. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook for 1-2 minutes over very low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly. Be careful not to burn the sauce.

Step 3

Step 4

To assemble the skewers, cut the sundae into pieces that are suitable for skewering. Aim for pieces that are roughly the length of your skewers. Carefully thread one piece of sundae onto each skewer, ensuring they are placed snugly and evenly.

Step 4

Step 5

Place the skewered sundae into the warm sauce in the pan. Using a spoon or a brush, generously coat each skewer with the sauce, ensuring an even layer on all sides. Continue to coat the skewers, turning them gently, over low heat for about 1-2 minutes until they are beautifully glazed. Keep an eye on the heat to prevent the sauce from burning.

Step 5

Step 6

Finally, arrange the glazed sundae skewers on a serving plate. For an extra touch of flavor and visual appeal, sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds over the top. Your delicious and nostalgic sundae skewers are now ready to be enjoyed! They are best served warm.
