Ingredients

  • 2 Hoppang (Korean steamed buns)
  • A little water (for the microwave steamer)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Start by preparing your hoppang. These are ready to be steamed straight from the package.

Step 1

Step 2

Get a microwave-safe steamer ready. Add a small amount of water to the bottom of the steamer. This water will create steam, keeping your hoppang moist and tender. About half a standard mug of water should suffice.

Step 2

Step 3

Place the steamer basket or rack over the water. This ensures the hoppang doesn’t sit directly in the water, preventing it from becoming soggy.

Step 3

Step 4

Arrange the hoppang on the steamer rack. The ones shown here were at room temperature after being purchased from the supermarket. If your hoppang are refrigerated or frozen, you’ll need to increase the steaming time accordingly.

Step 4

Step 5

Cover the steamer with its lid or a microwave-safe bowl. This traps the steam, allowing the hoppang to cook evenly.

Step 5

Step 6

Microwave on high for 1 minute. If your hoppang were refrigerated, add an extra 30 seconds (total 1 minute 30 seconds). If they were frozen, you may need up to 2 minutes. Microwave wattages vary, so it’s best to start with the recommended time and check for doneness, adding more time in 15-30 second increments if needed. Be careful not to overcook, as this can make the buns tough.

Step 6

Step 7

Carefully remove the steamer from the microwave. Be cautious of the hot steam! Your hoppang should now be perfectly steamed – warm, soft, and ready to enjoy. Blow on them gently before taking a bite of this simple yet delicious winter treat. Isn’t it amazing how easy it is to make these without a traditional steamer?
