Ingredients

  • 12 pieces of Inari pockets (fried tofu pouches)
  • 1 block (approx. 300g) firm tofu
  • 1 packet of seasoned seasoning for Inari sushi
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • A pinch of sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

It’s crucial to remove as much moisture from the tofu as possible. Place the tofu in a cheesecloth or clean kitchen towel and squeeze firmly to drain out the water. You can mash the tofu with a knife for a smoother consistency. When transferring the mashed tofu to a bowl, use a knife held at an angle and gently scrape from underneath to cleanly move it.

To further reduce any remaining moisture, lightly stir-fry the mashed tofu in a dry pan over medium heat. Once some of the moisture has evaporated, add 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for a nutty aroma and flavor. For a diet-friendly approach, no salt is added. If there’s still significant moisture, continue stir-frying for a bit longer.

The sweet and sour seasoning packet typically included with Inari sushi is omitted here, considering the moisture content of the tofu. Adding the sauce could make the filling too wet, making it difficult to stuff the Inari pockets neatly. Mix the stir-fried tofu with the seasoned seasoning packet for Inari sushi and a pinch of sesame seeds.

Lightly blanching the Inari pockets in boiling water helps remove excess oil and reduce calories, resulting in a cleaner taste. To fill the Inari pockets, use a spoon for convenience. While you can use your hands with gloves, it can be a bit challenging. A teaspoon is too small and awkward. A wooden spoon works best for stuffing the tofu mixture into the pockets. Note that 1 block of tofu might be more than needed for 12 Inari pockets; using half a block is often recommended.
