Nutty Perilla Seed Radish Namul
This is ‘Deulkkae Muna-mul’ (Radish Namul with Perilla Seeds), a savory side dish made with radish and perilla seed powder. It’s a perfect addition to your banchan spread!
I’ve made a delicious and nutty radish namul using perilla seeds! This delightful side dish offers a wonderfully rich flavor and a tender texture that perfectly complements any meal. It’s incredibly easy to prepare, making it a go-to recipe for a healthy and satisfying side.
Ingredients- 1/2 Radish
- 2 Tbsp Sesame Oil
- 200ml Water
- 3 Tbsp Perilla Seed Powder
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1/2 Green Onion
- 1 tsp Salt
- A little Sesame Seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare half a radish. Wash it thoroughly, then use a peeler to remove the outer skin. This is the first step to bringing out the fresh radish flavor.
Step 2
Here’s the radish after the skin has been peeled off. Preparing it this way helps maintain a crisp texture while allowing it to cook up tender.
Step 3
Use a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife to julienne the half radish. Aim for thin strips (about 0.3cm thick) so they cook evenly and absorb the seasoning well.
Step 4
Now, let’s start the sautéing process. Add 2 tablespoons of sesame oil to a pot to impart a nutty aroma. (Apologies for the slightly blurry photo at this step!)
Step 5
Once the sesame oil is warm, add all the julienned radish to the pot.
Step 6
Sauté the radish over high heat until it starts to release its moisture. Stir-frying it like this helps to evaporate some of the water, leading to a deeper flavor.
Step 7
After sautéing the radish for a bit, pour in 200ml of water. This water will help to gently cook the radish until it’s tender.
Step 8
Cover the pot and let the radish cook over medium-low heat until it becomes translucent and tender, which should take about 5-7 minutes. Adjust heat as needed.
Step 9
Once the radish is tender, add 3 tablespoons of perilla seed powder. This is the key ingredient for that wonderful nutty flavor that will awaken your appetite.
Step 10
Add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic for an extra layer of flavor. The slight pungency of garlic pairs beautifully with the richness of perilla seeds.
Step 11
Finally, add half a green onion, finely chopped, for a fresh aromatic touch. You can also use scallions if you prefer.
Step 12
Now it’s time to season. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and stir everything together well, tasting as you go. If it’s not salty enough, feel free to add a little more salt.
Step 13
Sauté for another moment to let all the ingredients meld together. Sprinkle a small amount of sesame seeds on top for added texture and nutty flavor.
Step 14
Once all the ingredients are well combined and the flavors have melded, your delicious Deulkkae Muna-mul is ready! Enjoy it with a warm bowl of rice.
Step 15
Behold the finished Deulkkae Muna-mul! It looks so appetizing and promises a wonderfully nutty and tender taste. Enjoy your meal!
