Refreshing and Deep Flavor: Clam Seaweed Soup (Bajirak Miyeokguk)

This is a nourishing Clam Seaweed Soup made with love to celebrate my daughter’s recent childbirth. Even when using frozen clams, adding store-bought clam broth creates a deep and refreshing soup base, perfect for special occasions or when you need a comforting meal. This recipe provides detailed steps and tips for beginners to follow with ease.

Recipe Info

  • Category : Soup / Broth
  • Ingredient Category : Seafood
  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Boil / Simmer
  • Servings : 5 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 60 minutes
  • Difficulty : Beginner

Main Ingredients

  • 50g dried seaweed (Miyeok)
  • 300g frozen clams (Bajirak)
  • 1.5L store-bought clam broth (or anchovy-kelp broth)

Seasoning & Others

  • 2-3 Tbsp soup soy sauce (Gukganjang) (adjust to taste)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare all the ingredients for the recipe. Soak the dried seaweed in water, rinse it thoroughly, drain, and cut into bite-sized pieces. Rinse the frozen clams under running water to thaw and prepare them.

Step 1

Step 2

Heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in a wide pot over medium-low heat. Add the prepared seaweed and sauté for 3-5 minutes until it softens. Adding 1/2 tablespoon of minced garlic at this stage will also enhance the aroma and flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the seaweed is lightly sautéed, pour in 1.5L of water or your prepared broth. (You can also use anchovy and kelp broth.)

Step 3

Step 4

When the liquid begins to boil, add the store-bought clam broth and simmer together. This step significantly deepens and refreshes the soup’s flavor. Let it simmer for a bit to allow the ingredients to meld.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the broth is boiling, add the thawed frozen clams and season with 2-3 tablespoons of soup soy sauce to your liking. Cook until the clams open their shells. (As the clams cook, their sweet juices will release into the broth, making it even more delicious.)

Step 5

Step 6

Continue to simmer the soup for another 5-10 minutes, or until all the clams have opened and the broth has developed a rich flavor. Skim off any foam that rises to the surface during cooking for a cleaner, clearer soup.

Step 6

Step 7

Serve this refreshing and deeply flavorful Clam Seaweed Soup in a bowl. Enjoy a satisfying meal with a warm bowl of rice!
