I made this dish using ingredients I had on hand because I missed the taste of Korean food while abroad. It’s a recipe that brings a comforting taste of home!

Main Ingredients

  • 300g chicken breast
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1/2 medium carrot
  • 1 cup milk

Spicy and Sweet Sauce

  • 2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp crushed red pepper (or adjust to your preference)
  • 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp ketchup
  • 3 Tbsp honey (adjust sweetness to taste)
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 5 Tbsp water

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, wash and prepare all the ingredients needed for the stir-fried chicken breast. Slice the onion and carrot into bite-sized pieces.

To tenderize the chicken breast and remove any gamey smell, soak it in milk for about 15 to 20 minutes. This step ensures the chicken breast remains moist and tender.

Now, let’s make the sauce. Prepare 2 tablespoons of minced garlic.

In a bowl, combine the minced garlic with 1 Tbsp crushed red pepper, 1 Tbsp gochujang, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp ketchup, 3 Tbsp honey, 2 Tbsp sugar, and 5 Tbsp water. Mix well to create a delicious sauce. You can adjust the sweetness by modifying the amount of honey and sugar.

It’s time to start stir-frying! Heat a frying pan over medium heat. Ensuring the pan is properly heated is key to perfectly stir-fried ingredients.

While the pan is heating, get your sliced onion and carrot ready. If you slice the carrot thinly, it will cook more evenly.

Once the pan is hot, add a generous amount of olive oil. Add in some dried red chilies or chili peppers (optional) and crushed red pepper to infuse the oil with flavor. This aromatic base will enhance the overall taste of the dish. Keep the heat at medium-low.

Rinse the chicken breast that was soaked in milk under cold water to remove the milk. Gently pat it dry with a paper towel; this helps prevent oil splattering while cooking.

Add the prepared carrots to the heated pan and stir-fry them lightly. Lightly sautéing the carrots brings out their natural sweetness and flavor.

Once the carrots are partially cooked, add the drained chicken breast to the pan and continue to stir-fry. Cook until the surface of the chicken breast turns white.

As the chicken breast cooks, flip it occasionally to ensure even cooking. When the chicken is almost done, add the sliced onion and stir-fry together, allowing the flavors to meld.

Check to make sure the chicken breast is fully cooked. Then, cut it into bite-sized pieces. This makes it easier to eat and allows the sauce to penetrate the meat better.

Now, pour all the prepared spicy and sweet sauce into the pan and stir-fry. Be mindful of the heat to prevent the sauce from burning.
