I saw this on an Instagram Reel and was so curious, I had to try making this tofu sandwich right away! Hearing that it tastes even better than regular bread, I just had to give it a go! I can’t stand not knowing something I’m curious about! Introducing a tofu sandwich with a surprising charm that’s crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It’s amazing that such a delicious sandwich is possible without bread!

Main Ingredients

  • 1 block Tofu
  • 8 slices Processed Cheese
  • 8 slices Processed Ham
  • Wholegrain Mustard (to taste)
  • Strawberry Jam (to taste)

Cooking Instructions

First, slice the tofu thinly, about the thickness of sandwich bread, approximately 1 to 1.5 cm thick. Place the sliced tofu on paper towels and press down firmly to remove as much moisture as possible. Removing the water from the tofu is crucial for achieving a better texture when cooked or frozen, preventing it from becoming watery.

Place the drained tofu in a zip-top bag or wrap it tightly with plastic wrap, then freeze it for at least 3 hours until solid. Once frozen, take the tofu out and bake it in a preheated oven at 200°C (392°F). Bake for 10 minutes on each side, flipping in between, for a total of 20 minutes. This cooking method will make the tofu golden and crispy on the outside, while keeping it tender and moist on the inside, creating an excellent texture similar to bread.

On one side of the warm, freshly baked tofu, spread a thin layer of flavorful wholegrain mustard. You can adjust the amount according to your preference. On the other side, spread strawberry jam to your liking. The zesty kick of the wholegrain mustard and the sweetness of the strawberry jam surprisingly complement each other well!

Take two pieces of tofu with the sauces spread on them. On one piece of tofu, layer 2 slices of processed cheese, followed by 2 slices of processed ham. Then, place the other piece of tofu on top, sauce-side down, to form the sandwich.

Carefully cut the tofu sandwich in half into bite-sized pieces using a knife. Place the cut sandwich in the microwave and heat for about 30 seconds. This step will gently melt the cheese, allowing all the ingredients to meld together beautifully.

Voilà! Your tofu sandwich is complete, showcasing a fantastic visual with the perfectly melted cheese. The slightly chewy exterior and the moist, flavorful interior are simply exquisite. It’s incredible how you can enjoy such a wonderful sandwich without bread. You must try making it!
