Chewy and Savory Stir-fried Fish Cake and Fried Tofu

This is a mild and savory stir-fry made with leftover fish cakes and cabbage from the fridge, along with frozen fried tofu. The combination of chewy fried tofu and fish cakes, and crunchy cabbage, makes an excellent side dish that is perfect for busy modern lives. Ingredients

  • 5 sheets of square fish cakes
  • 1/5 head of cabbage
  • 1 cup of sliced fried tofu
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp chopped green onion
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds

First, cut the cabbage into bite-sized square pieces and set aside. Cut the square fish cakes into similar sizes as the cabbage. Cutting the ingredients to similar sizes will make them look better when stir-fried and cook more evenly.

For the fried tofu, we’re using thinly sliced pieces, so no further preparation is needed. They can be used as is for convenience.

Double-check that the cut fish cakes are similar in size to the cabbage and set them aside. Preparing all ingredients in bite-sized pieces makes cooking and eating much easier.

Now, let’s get stir-frying. Heat a pan over medium heat and add a moderate amount of cooking oil. Add the prepared cabbage, fish cakes, and fried tofu. Also, add the chopped green onions. We are not adding minced garlic in this recipe to highlight the natural flavors of the fish cakes and tofu, and to emphasize the sweetness of the cabbage. A strong garlic flavor could overpower the ingredients’ inherent tastes.

Season simply with salt and pepper. Add 1 tablespoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of pepper, then stir-fry until all ingredients are well combined. Stir-frying over medium heat rather than high heat prevents burning and ensures the ingredients cook tenderly.

When the cabbage becomes translucent and starts to soften, it’s almost done. Just before turning off the heat, drizzle in a teaspoon of sesame oil for an added nutty aroma and enhanced flavor.

Finally, sprinkle a generous amount of toasted sesame seeds over the top and gently mix. The nutty flavor of the sesame seeds will further elevate the dish’s taste.
