Tteokbokki Ingredients

  • 1 bowl rice cakes (tteok) (approx. 200g)
  • Scallion, as needed (approx. 1/4 stalk)

Spicy & Sweet Sauce

  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2.5 Tbsp oligosaccharide (or corn syrup)
  • 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
  • 0.5 Tbsp sesame oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, rinse the rice cakes (tteok) lightly under cold water. If the rice cakes are very hard, you can briefly blanch them in boiling water to soften them. After blanching, rinse them under cold water to prevent sticking and drain them thoroughly. Finely chop the scallions.

Step 1

Step 2

In a large bowl, combine the prepared rice cakes and the chopped scallions. Mixing them in a bowl beforehand makes it easier to coat them evenly with the sauce later on.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, prepare the sauce ingredients for a spicy and sweet flavor: 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 2.5 tablespoons of oligosaccharide, 1 tablespoon of red pepper flakes, and 0.5 tablespoon of sesame oil for a nutty aroma. You can adjust the amount of oligosaccharide to your preference for sweetness.

Step 3

Step 4

Pour all the prepared sauce ingredients over the rice cakes and scallions in the bowl. Use a spoon or spatula to mix well, ensuring that the sauce is evenly distributed and coats every piece. It’s important to mix for about 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 4

Step 5

Heat a pan over medium-low heat and add a generous amount of cooking oil. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the sauce-coated rice cakes to the pan. Be mindful of the heat, as high heat can cause the rice cakes to burn.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the rice cakes are in the pan, stir them continuously with chopsticks or a spatula to prevent them from sticking together. Stir-fry for about 5-7 minutes, or until the surfaces of the rice cakes are lightly golden and glossy. Your delicious Gireum Tteokbokki is ready! It’s best enjoyed immediately while warm.
