Homemade Mulberry Jam
Easy Recipe for Delicious Mulberry Jam
A homemade mulberry jam recipe perfect for your kitchen. This jam is wonderfully versatile, ideal for spreading on toast or mixing into yogurt. Its delightful sweet and tart flavor is a true treat.
Ingredients- 1kg fresh mulberries
- 600g granulated sugar (adjust to your sweetness preference)
- 2-3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice (or bottled lemon juice)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Begin by sterilizing the jars you’ll use for your mulberry jam. Fill a pot with water and place the jars upside down on top of it. Bring the water to a boil and let the jars steam for about 10 minutes.
Step 2
Carefully remove the sterilized jars from the pot. Place them upside down with the opening facing upwards to allow any residual moisture to evaporate naturally. It’s okay if they aren’t completely dry. Be cautious when placing jars into boiling water, as a sudden temperature change can cause them to crack.
Step 3
You can leave the small stems on the mulberries; they are edible and don’t need to be removed before making the jam.
Step 4
To create a smooth jam, you’ll be blending the mulberries. After washing them thoroughly, place the mulberries into a blender or food processor, ready to be pureed.
Step 5
Blend the mulberries until they form a smooth puree. Be careful not to over-blend, as this can create excess foam.
Step 6
Combine the 1kg of pureed mulberries with 600g of sugar in a pot. You can adjust the amount of sugar based on the natural sweetness of the mulberries and your personal taste. If you’re making a large batch, it’s often easier to divide the mixture into two batches to prevent boiling over. This also helps ensure even cooking.
Step 7
Once the mixture starts to boil, stir in 2-3 tablespoons of lemon juice. Lemon juice not only brightens the jam’s color and adds a lovely tartness but also helps it to set properly. If fresh lemons aren’t available, bottled lemon juice works perfectly well.
Step 8
Reduce the heat to low or medium-low and stir continuously to prevent sticking or burning. Jam can bubble up vigorously, so keep stirring with a spatula, scraping the sides and bottom of the pot. Failing to stir can cause the jam to boil over or scorch.
Step 9
Continue to cook and stir until the jam reaches your desired consistency. Some prefer a looser jam, while others like it thicker. A good test for doneness is to drop a spoonful of jam into a bowl of cold water; if it holds its shape and doesn’t spread out too quickly, it’s ready. Once it’s reached the perfect consistency, remove it from the heat and carefully ladle the hot jam into the prepared sterilized jars.
Step 10
Your delicious homemade mulberry jam is now ready! It’s fantastic spread on toast, bread, or croissants, and it makes a wonderful addition to plain yogurt for a healthy breakfast or snack.
