Spam and Tofu Patties
How to Make Delicious Spam and Tofu Patties Easily
Hello everyone! Today, my husband and I made ‘Spam Tofu Patties,’ which are perfect as a side dish or a snack. I’ll show you how to make them! They’re so satisfying and flavorful.
Main Ingredients- 1 can Spam (approx. 200g)
- 1 block firm tofu (approx. 300g), for pan-frying
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s finely mince all the vegetables. Peel the carrot and dice it very finely. If the pieces are too large, the texture won’t be as pleasant, so aim for the smallest dice possible.
Step 2
Peel and finely mince the onion as well. Adding finely minced onion will enhance the sweetness and flavor of the patties.
Step 3
Remove the stem from the Korean green chili pepper, shake out the seeds, and then mince it thoroughly. If you enjoy spicy food, you can include the seeds, or omit it or substitute with a milder pepper if you’re making these for children.
Step 4
Chop the white parts of the green onion finely. If you have any leftover vegetables in your fridge, feel free to add them in with the carrots, onions, and green onions to make the patties even more flavorful (e.g., zucchini, bell peppers).
Step 5
Squeeze out as much water as possible from the firm tofu using a cheesecloth or paper towels. Place the squeezed tofu in a bowl and mash it thoroughly with your hands or a tool until it’s smooth and lump-free.
Step 6
Now, let’s prepare the Spam. You can dice the Spam into bite-sized cubes, or if you’re mashing it with the tofu, you can just add it in. (Tip: For a lighter flavor, you can briefly blanch the Spam in hot water to remove some of the excess grease, but it’s delicious without this step too!) Add the Spam to the bowl with the mashed tofu and mash them together. The salty and savory flavor of the Spam will beautifully complement the tofu.
Step 7
Add the finely minced vegetables to the bowl. Start with the minced Korean green chili pepper and green onion.
Step 8
Next, add all the minced onion.
Step 9
Finally, add the minced carrot. This will add vibrant color and a delightful crunch to the patties.
Step 10
Gently mix all the ingredients with your hands to form the base of the mixture. Knead it well so that the ingredients bind together. Then, add 3 tablespoons of Korean pancake mix to adjust the consistency. The pancake mix will help hold everything together.
Step 11
Crack 2 large eggs into the mixture. The eggs will help bind the ingredients further and add a lovely richness.
Step 12
Using a spoon or your hands, mix everything thoroughly until it’s evenly combined and there are no large lumps. The consistency of the mixture should be firm enough to shape into patties, not too wet.
Step 13
Now, let’s shape the mixture into patties. They are typically made into round, flat shapes, similar to ‘donggeurangttaeng’. Take a portion of the mixture, roll it into a ball, and then flatten it with your palm. (Tip: Lightly oiling your palms before shaping will prevent the mixture from sticking, making the process much easier!)
Step 14
Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add a generous amount of olive oil or cooking oil. Place the shaped patties in the pan and cook them until golden brown on both sides over medium heat. Be mindful of the heat to prevent burning, and ensure they cook through to the center by cooking them slowly over medium heat. Swirl the pan occasionally to distribute the oil evenly.
Step 15
Once they are golden brown on both sides and cooked through to the center, your delicious Spam and Tofu Patties are ready! Cooking them slowly over gentle heat ensures they don’t burn and remain moist inside.
Step 16
Serve these delightful Spam and Tofu Patties warm on a plate. They make a fantastic side dish, a perfect snack for kids, and an excellent accompaniment to a cold beer!
