All the detailed ingredients are listed below, so just follow along step-by-step to create your own delicious homemade sausage rolls. Please note that this recipe requires an oven! Let’s get started on making these delightful Pigs in a Blanket!
Dough Ingredients- 250g Bread Flour
- 1 Large Egg
- 125ml Lukewarm Milk
- 2 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 tsp Instant Dry Yeast
- 0.5 tsp Salt
- 25g Unsalted Butter (room temperature)
- 1 Tbsp Cooking Oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, we’ll create the chewy dough that forms the base of our delicious rolls. In a large bowl, measure and add 250g of bread flour.
Step 2
In a separate bowl, crack 1 egg, add 125ml of lukewarm milk (not too hot, not too cold), 2 Tbsp of sugar for sweetness, and 1 tsp of yeast to help with rising. Whisk everything together until well combined. Letting it sit for a moment will help the yeast dissolve nicely in the milk.
Step 3
In the bowl with the bread flour, make a well on one side and add 0.5 tsp of salt. Next, pour the liquid mixture (milk, egg, sugar, yeast mixture) into the well. Initially, use a spatula or chopstick to gently mix until just combined, so no dry flour is visible.
Step 4
Once the dough starts to come together, add 25g of unsalted butter (softened at room temperature) and begin kneading vigorously. Use the palm of your hand to push, fold, and stretch the dough for about 10 minutes. It’s crucial to knead until the butter is fully incorporated and the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
Step 5
After the dough is smooth, lightly grease the inside of the bowl with 1 Tbsp of cooking oil. Place the dough in the greased bowl and use your hands to coat the surface of the dough thinly with the oil. This helps prevent the dough from drying out and promotes better rising.
Step 6
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel. Place it in a warm, humid spot (like inside a slightly warmed oven or microwave) for about 1 hour for the first proof. The dough should roughly double in size.
Step 7
Once the dough has finished its first rise, gently punch it down to release the trapped gases. This step is called ‘degassing’.
Step 8
Lightly dust your work surface or a large cutting board with a little extra flour to prevent the dough from sticking. Place the degassed dough on the floured surface and gently press it down.
Step 9
Now it’s time to roll out the dough thinly. Using a rolling pin, carefully roll the dough into a large rectangle, aiming for a thickness of about 0.1 to 0.2 mm. The thinner you roll it, the more pastry you’ll have to wrap around the sausage, resulting in a tastier roll!
Step 10
We’re going to cut the thinly rolled dough into pizza-slice-like shapes. Make sure the wider base of each triangular cut is adjusted to the length of your sausage. This ensures a neat wrap. Be mindful not to cut the base too narrow.
Step 11
Place a sausage at the wider end (the base) of each dough triangle. Gently roll the dough up and around the sausage, enclosing it completely. Try to maintain a snug, but not overly tight, wrap.
Step 12
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the sausage-wrapped doughs onto the sheet, leaving some space between them. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) while you prepare the rolls.
Step 13
To give the rolls a beautiful golden-brown finish, we’ll make an egg wash. In a small bowl, crack 1 egg and add 2 Tbsp of milk. Whisk together until well combined.
Step 14
Using a pastry brush, gently brush the egg wash evenly over the top of each sausage roll. Make sure to cover the dough thoroughly.
Step 15
Finally, sprinkle a pinch of sesame seeds over the top for a nice visual appeal and a subtle nutty flavor. Don’t overdo it, as they can burn easily.
Step 16
Now, place the baking sheet into the preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) and bake for about 15 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and puffed up. Baking times may vary slightly depending on your oven.
Step 17
Voila! Freshly baked, warm, and delicious homemade sausage rolls (Pigs in a Blanket) are ready! The aroma is absolutely wonderful. Enjoy your delightful creation!
