  • Occasion : Lunchbox
  • Cooking : Boiled
  • Servings : 2 servings
  • Difficulty : Beginner

Main Ingredients

  • 2 bowls of cooked rice (approx. 2 servings)
  • 1 packet of seasoned seaweed flakes for rice
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare the sausages for the flower shape. Cut each sausage into 4 equal pieces, leaving about 1cm uncut at the top. Then, make delicate cuts lengthwise and diagonally on the cut surfaces to create petal-like shapes. Be careful not to cut all the way through.

Step 1

Step 2

To enhance the flower shape, make additional shallow cuts across the previous cuts (horizontally, vertically, and diagonally) on the petal surfaces. This step helps the ‘petals’ open up beautifully when cooked. Gently spread the cuts outward to define the flower shape.

Step 2

Step 3

Boil water in a pot. Once boiling, carefully add the prepared sausage ‘flowers’ and blanch them for 1-2 minutes. This process helps the sausages maintain their shape, removes excess oil, and gives them a cleaner finish.

Step 3

Step 4

In a bowl with 2 bowls of warm cooked rice, add 1 Tbsp butter, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, and the entire packet of seasoned seaweed flakes. Gently mix everything together with a spatula or spoon. Be careful not to mash the rice grains; aim for an even distribution of the seasoning and seaweed.

Step 4

Step 5

Take a portion of the seasoned rice and shape it into a round onigiri (rice ball). Create a small indentation in the center of the rice ball using your thumb. Then, gently insert one of the blanched flower-shaped sausages into the indentation and carefully mold the rice around it to enclose the sausage. Ensure the onigiri is firm enough so the sausage stays in place.
