Main Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tbsp pancake mix (buchim garu)
  • Generous amount of cooking oil (enough to shallow fry)

Dipping Sauce

  • 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce (jin-ganjang)
  • 1 Tbsp vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp water
  • 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, peel the onion completely and wash it thoroughly under running water. Next, leaving the root end slightly intact, slice the onion as thinly as possible. Thin slices will ensure a tender texture when cooked.

Step 1

Step 2

Place the thinly sliced onions in a large bowl and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of pancake mix. Gently toss or use a spatula to coat the onion slices evenly with the pancake mix, being careful not to break them. Coat them lightly, as if you were breading them for frying.

Step 2

Step 3

In another bowl, whisk 1 egg until smooth. Carefully dip the pancake-mix-coated onion slices into the beaten egg, ensuring they are fully coated. Gently stir to distribute the egg wash evenly over the onions.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, heat a pan over medium heat. Once the pan is adequately warm, add a generous amount of cooking oil. Using enough oil will help the onion pancakes cook to a beautiful golden brown without burning.

Step 4

Step 5

Carefully place the egg-coated onion slices into the hot oil. Avoid overcrowding the pan; leave some space between each pancake. Cook over medium-low heat until one side is golden brown and crispy, then flip and cook the other side until equally golden and crisp. Continue cooking until the onions become translucent and tender.

Step 5

Step 6

While the pancakes are cooking, prepare the dipping sauce. In a small bowl, combine 1.5 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of water. Mix well. Finally, stir in 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds for a nutty aroma. Your delicious dipping sauce is ready! Serve the warm onion pancakes with the dipping sauce for an exquisite taste.
