Main Ingredients

  • 3 sheets of flat fish cakes (eomuk, approx. 200g)
  • 1/4 stalk of green onion
  • 1 chili pepper (preferably Korean green chili for a mild spice)
  • 1/2 onion

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • A pinch of sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare the vegetables: First, slice the green onion diagonally. Seed the chili pepper and slice it diagonally for a touch of spice. Slice the onion into strips. Cutting them not too thinly will help maintain a pleasant texture after stir-frying.

Step 1

Step 2

Cut the fish cakes: Cut the flat fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. Typically, cutting them into 3-4 cm lengths is ideal. Place all the cut fish cakes into a pot or pan.

Step 2

Step 3

Stir-fry with soy sauce: Add 2 tablespoons of soy sauce to the pan with the fish cakes. Drizzle in a little cooking oil, and then stir-fry over high heat for about 1 minute until the soy sauce is evenly absorbed. This step enhances the savory flavor.

Step 3

Step 4

Add and stir-fry vegetables: Add the sliced onion and diagonally sliced chili pepper to the fish cakes that have been seasoned with soy sauce. Stir-fry together until the onion becomes translucent.

Step 4

Step 5

Add remaining seasonings: Now it’s time to add the rest of the seasoning ingredients. Add 1/2 tablespoon of minced garlic, 1/2 tablespoon of gochugaru, and 1 teaspoon of brown sugar. Stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes until all ingredients are well combined. Be careful not to burn the sugar while stir-frying.

Step 5

Step 6

Final touches: Finally, add the chopped green onion and sesame seeds. Gently toss everything together to combine. The aromatic green onion and nutty sesame seeds will make your Eomuk Bokkeum even more delicious.

Step 6

Step 7

Serve and enjoy: Once all ingredients are well incorporated, turn off the heat. Transfer the appetizing Eomuk Bokkeum to a serving dish. It’s a perfect side dish to enjoy with a bowl of warm rice!
